cool! i wanna get really accurate with a cap and ball so i can hunt rabbits. what i like about cap n' balls is you can buy them with no paper trail. it feels got to have a weapon you are really good with and you can make your own ammo for. i figure i could shoot this for close to free. i could get recovered lead from shooting ranges, wheel weights from the side of the highway and auto shops and a few pounds from some old car batteries. make a bunch of lead ingots and mold my own bullets. i can make very good black powder for about 5 bucks a pound because i make my softwood charcoal get my sulfur for free, and can buy my potassium nitrate as stump remover for only 5 bucks a pound. patches are easy given that my mother is a quilter and can give me enough cotton fabric scraps to make an infinite amount of patches. because i could just cover the cylinders with bacon grease or something to prevent a chain fire, percussion caps are pretty cheap so it would only cost me a couple bucks a month to shoot this thing.

I need to buy another bag of single O buck, I hear Hornaday isn't going to be makeing them anymore.I don't even bother with casting for this one, and you won't need any patches for the revolver, and unsallted Crisco or plain lard work fine for over the ball lube.I use Remington no. 10 caps, and just picked up a spare cylinder for mine from Cabela's.

My last contribution to this particular thread..Busyhands, I wasn't referring to the noise. Hell, you could probably scare him/her off by blowing a horn or beating on a tin pot with a spoon UNLESS it's a she and she has some real hungry kittens, OR UNLESS some damn idiot had shot she/him with a small caliber revolver and left the cat crippled and in desperate straits. That could cause serious problems for lot's of people, not to mention the pain and suffering it would cause the animal....

No, patches aren't used in revolvers, and the grease won't get past good fitting balls.I did a little research, and the shot I have must not have come from Hornaday, since it's dead soft, and Hornaday uses chilled hard shot.I still have about 150 but I split it up with a buddy years ago, and he got the bag, so I have no idea of the manufacturer.I may just have to buy a shot mold and make twenty or so at a time. There's one over on Evilbay, but I don't use them, so I put a ''WTB'' ad over on Cast Boolits website.

Mr. Charcoal i am pretty sure the noise would scare off the cat because of their sensitive hearing, i would never want to shoot an animal unless i honestly had to to protect my life. and i think you guys are right, this probably won't cut it even with smokeless powder and oversized grips. although i might fire a round or two if one was nearby to cause some noise that would scare the animal off and let it know i am a threat not prey. but only if i saw one nearby or started getting the chills. i am sensitive in the sense that i can sense trouble a mile away.

Gentalman of the charcoal!

I HAVE SEEN A COUGAR HERE IN MICHIGAN! he ran down a log and grabbed a turkey,I didn't have my companion but i did have a R O A ,and still felt outgunned, although I'm sure a well placed shot from a companion and a prayer to the almighty would do the trick if need be, google delta co. mi. cougar and youll see what i mean,293 lb cougar road kill:eek:Animals its whats for dinner!

The ones around here seriously mauled an elderly couple summer before last, and knocked off a bicyclist last summer.Still, if you are armed, they will leave you strictly alone.

LOL! That might be taking the minimalism a bit far! Mr. lion might just eat you before he realised you were armed, and you'd have to shoot your way back out...

i think you are right, knowing my luck if i get cocky and carry that little gem that is smaller than a .22 Mr. Lion will probably pick that gun out of his teeth. sure for snakes, squirrels and rabbits it is perfect and it is really accurate despite being a derringer (i like to call mine my pocket hunter) but i don't think i could effectively kill anything larger than a rabbit because even though the round is going 1000 FPS it still is a small. soft, thin .17 pellet. although i have to say it is PERFECT for pest birds like starlings, rattlesnakes, really really big bugs, mice, rats, squirrels, rabbits and is a one shot stop for any charging pop cans. a good load is 4 paper caps as the powder, 1 plastic cap as the primer, and an airgun pellet rolled between two pieces of metal. they are actually wonderful little pistols and i highly recommend getting one. here is mine next to a tin of her favorite pellets and her holster as well as a Zippo for size comparison. http://s1178.photobucket.com/albums/x372/busyhands94/?action=view&current=riderderringer.jpg

My father in law told stories of when he was young in Nebraska and a neighbor had a pet cougar that loved ice cream and he showed up there with an ice cream cone. He saw the cougar at 30yds and then his cone was gone and the cougar was sitting beside him licking its chops. His words were:if it sees you first and wants you, unless it runs into your gunbarrel and shoots itself, you're lunch.

See why I keep coming back here? The stuff I learn! From now on I'm leaving the little five shooters at home, and I'm going to start carrying an ice cream cone....

I now have two of the pistolas and three spare cylinders. I think I'll either get one more pistol, or one more spare cylinder, for symmetry's sake.

The ''magnum'' black powder. I had a neat little .22 lr cartridge model, with elk horn grips, but because of the outsized nature of my paws, I got sideblast in my hands every shot.Had to get rid of it, and replaced it with these longer cylinder ones, which are much more pleasant to shoot!

watched your videos...I did the same stuff as a kid, [don't take offence, I'm 54, everyone's a ''kid''] but that mold...I think that elevates you to true Evil Genius status!
