And like the other one that happened last week in Alaska they could not get to their 'bear spray'.

Not trying to make this a 'what kind of gun for bear' thread since if you keep your gun stuffed in the pack you can't use it either but...

I'm amazed how many people go to these places and do not have some form of IMMEDIATE defense.

No you dont need to be armed with anything but common sense and a little knowledge of bear behavior. Chances you are going to hit an attacking grizzly bear with whatever round you are firing slim to none.

Momma bear was protecting its cub. Hiker was ignorant and stupid. Sorry there was no reason to shoot this bear. Hiker was lucky he wasnt killed.

Problem is way too many folks these days dont have a clue about wild and domestic animals. One of my neighbors and their kids was trying to catch coyote puppy because they thought it was a lost pup. Really bright. Thank god the mountain lion cubs havent strayed onto their estate. Mommy is a big tme liberal TV pundit.

Live and let live.

walks between mommy and cub, doesn't back away, did he even understand what was going on, or was it 'bear---Oh *shoot*....

Be prepared, MINDSET... SKILLSET... equipment (hopefully accessable...)
that order.

Untrue.

I am not sure how you ascertained that the hiker was ignorant and stupid. Surprise encounter "attacks" are some of the most frequent that occur, usually where both parties are unaware of the other.

I guess you could say the hiker was lucky he wasn't killed. Anytime you are in such an event, survival is a good thing. However, most people who end up in these sorts of encounters do survive. Even most of those who suffer physical harm survive. The odds really were in his favor that he would. However with such attacks, the odds were also in the favor of him ending up at the hospital as a result, which is fairly commonplace with even the briefest of attacks that result in harm being done to humans.

Who said he walked between the sow and cub?

Exactly. Today's new age back to nature folks know what kind of granola to take along, but have no clue whatsoever about the animals they may encounter. Yep....bear spray does a lot of good stashed at the bottom of your backpack.
