I'm working up a 9mm Luger load for 124gr Gold Dots, and to get where I want to be, the seating depth is getting shallower than I normally prefer.

I AM using two reliable sources of published data, but not specifically for the Speer G.D bullet, just other 124 gr JHPs and JFPs.

I'm using a 1.142" OAL in my latest test, which shot well, but I would like to up the powder just skosh more for maybe 20-30 FPS more speed avg. I may need to lengthen the oal to get it without compressing my powder.

The Speer 124 G.D. bullet is .561" long (shorter than some other JHPs I load), so I'd appreciate if someone could measure and give me the commercial ammo OAL to know Speer's seating depth.

I'm not interested in "other" options", just curious.

Thanks.

Recommended oal for 9MM 124 Gold Dots is 1.125" from Speer. That's the length I use and they shoot well. No problems with mildly compressed powder.

No problems with mildly compressed powder.

Depends on the powder. I'm not using a 'fluffy" powder, but thanks for the info on Speer's seating depth. I am getting pretty 'shallow'. My loads are getting 1150-ish on the chrono. I'll play with it a little more.

I am using 1.100" OAL for 124 gr Gold Dots with WSF and powder charges are below the bullet bottom in the case.

Here are some factory measurements from another thread - http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?p=7478780#post7478780

The box I measured all ranged from 1.120-1.125". The irregular shape of the hollowpoint tip will cause some variation.

Speer loads their 124gr +P Gold Dot ammunition to 1.120.
I just measured a box of it.

Thanks guys, that was my question. I am seating quite a bit shallower, but speed, accuracy and feel has been good. My Sig (3.6" bbl) will accept a length longer than the mags will hold. :)

I just loaded up another 25 --just .1 more grains--seated at 1.140" almost touching the n340 powder at the max published 5.7 grs. I think this will be fine. My first test rds at 1150 FPS were soft shooting with no indications of over-pressure. I'll chrono and test Tues.
They are sure pretty in nickel cases.;)

Thanks for the information.

Thanks Walkalong. I've loaded a million "light 9mm loads", but I'm dumb on hot loads; so I'll stay conservative, at least at first.;):D

Speer has a published OAL for that bullet of 1.120". But what you should really do is take your barrel out, and use it to find the proper OAL for your firearm.

I was going to suggest that but OP wanted factory OAL

Besides, OP posted that his barrel will accept OAL longer than his magazine ... and that's probably why OP asked for factory OAL. :D
