I know there's a few of you forum members from Ohio, and I assume some of you have taken carry courses here.

Any recommendations? I live in Dayton, so Cincinnati and Columbus are fair game.

Ohio Valley Trading in Lancaster has a good course with a range, so you get some trigger time as well, usually 8am till 7pm with an hour lunch 3 saturdays of the year. cost was like $120ish if memory serves with either your carry piece or a rental.

New Albany Shooting Range (may have changed hands and/or been renamed) offers courses. Choice of a one session or three session format. Decent range time and we got to shoot a lot of different handguns but they wouldn't allow use of your personal weapon. As I recall the cost was around $160 six years ago.

I will never understand the blanket prohibitions against bringing your own weapon....

Within "inspection will be done", that shouldn't be a problem.

OTOH, some of the junk I saw when I took the course in 2004 cannot be described.... Nor can the barely 21 kid who brought his buddy's gun (Sig, I think) and managed to disassemble it....

Part of the issue, of course, is getting some range time with that snubbie .38 that they just sold you.... It may be the only time you ever fire it :(.... Not everybody understands the "get more training later" aspects, or at least somewhat regular range time....

Too far off topic to talk about the .38's :D. I expect the instructors are passing out .22's, which isn't the dumbest idea in the world IF you get some range time with the bigger stuff eventually.... Like the guy who was in my class with a P-38. All he could hit was the floor. 9mm semi - should have been easy to shoot, and the gun was fine. I think he was afraid of it. Or the guy who showed up at the OPOTA course back in 1968 with a "Cowboy" SA in .45LC. This was before speedloaders became common, so nobody laughed too much, except the instructor.

Regards,

They made sure everyone shot a revolver of some flavor with .357 (I got an S&W snubbie) and everyone shot at least one magazine with a pistol. They had a nice selection and I got to shoot some pistols that I might otherwise never had an opportunity to handle (H&K, SIG). They also had S&Ws, Glock, and Walther (I think). Revelvers selection consisted of S&W, Ruger as I recall.

I teach with the PRO who run a course at their training center off I71/Cooke Rd in Columbus. The site for that is Central Ohio CCW

We have a 1:1 instructor to student ration on range night and spread it out over several nights to avoid it being a whole day brain dump.

We also provide everything, guns ammo etc.... if you want to use your own then thats fine.

Docpadds: Nice website, you've got some great deals there. I may stop in this weekend with some intent to buy!

I should note that when I mentioned taking the class to my wife she said "Well sign me up too!"

I havn't taken the courses yet but i know Vandalia Armory Offers them, they're right next to the airport, and so does Olde English.

BTW Olde English is also full of amazingly knowledgeable individuals.

I buy most of my guns at Olde English. They know my sister and I by name.

You guys should be members of OFCC or BFA!

Horrible punishments (i.e. Sammy the Jack Russell Terrorist) will be visited upon you otherwise :D....

I buy most of my stuff at Millers Rod & Gun in Boardman (they think they're in Struthers but Struthers managed to get the boundaries changed :)). They know me and my daughter. And Sammy....

Lousy prices.... Ugly staff (except Marlene and Denise).... Terrible service.... But WTH - I'm old....

308Win:

Sounds like a good setup. Matt brought some spares for those who didn't have something or brought junk and I had some extras in the bag too I think.... But it really was BYO....

I like that one-on-one thing for those who need it. I didn't but Matt did a lot of that as needed. And it was for a few people :). I tried to get Amy (a not quite "leave the wife and kiddies" blonde) to help me but she had more sense :D.... We did the course over two days with range time on both. I learned a few things. Others learned a LOT.... 'Course as I mentioned I did OPOTA in 1967-1968. OH wouldn't take my certification....

Dunno if Amy's reading this (probably not) but if my wife met her my wife would probably leave....

Regards

I took mine at the New Albany Shooting range. I paid a little under $200 for the one-day, 12 hour course. It was a looong day, but the people who work there really care about and enjoy what they do for a living. Don't worry about not being allowed to take your personal weapon... they'll have Smith & Wesson revolvers and autos, Glocks, Kimber/Wilson Combat 1911s, Springfield XDs, and just about anything else you could want to shoot. Everyone gets range time with .38/.357's, 9mm autos, and .45 autos. I think I shot about 15 guns that day and had a blast. Oh, and the facility is very nice as well. Good indoor range and a nice seperate classroom.

I didn't take my course threw New Albany SR but i have shot there alot and its a great place when the snow doesn't allow for outside shooting.

I went threw this course which was only $60 and was very basic but for the price it was good. http://www.chlohio.com/home.html

If I were you I would contact either John Vish or Proshooter (thr member) about taking the Utah permit class. One 8 hour cold-class and a 2 month wait for the permit and you're good to go. In PA you don't need a resident permit, and can carry on the Utah permit alone. The permit is also valid in 30 or so states. Check out how it works in Ohio, as it may be viable option for you.

I took the PRO course a few years back. Good course, good people.
Some of my friends took their course at New Albany and some at Black Wing in Delaware. Both are fine places, but I'm glad I took the PRO course.

Good CCW

I took my CCW with the guys from cincinnaticcw.com. Was $75 for the class. Was held at I want to say the Ramada in Mason (northern cincinnati). Range time they took us up to private property outside of Waynesville..

Another vote for New Albany Shooting Range around Columbus. They are currently asking $199 for the 12 hours but I found it to be educational and worth the time with their quality instructors, even as an experienced shooter. They do low light shooting and you get to take lasers and tac lights for a spin as well as a dozen plus different revolvers and autos.

Black Wing Shooting Center in Delaware also offer a class. According to their site, the price is $175 and includes ammunition.

BDSCR (Big Darby Creek Shooting Range, West Jefferson, OH), has two of the best instructors I've ever met. It's in the same price range, $200, for the 12 hr course. What's different about it than the others in Cen. OH, is you're spending more time outside practicing self defense shooting than inside an indoor range.

I agree with considering an instructor who is also cross-certified as a Utah Concealed Carry Instructor. It would be very helpful to complete both Ohio and Utah training in the same training class.

That gives you a cost-effective option if you decide down the road to also get your Utah non-resident Concealed Firearms Permit. This would give you reciprocity in many more states that your Ohio license alone, and is thus useful if you anticipate traveling in the next 5 years. Utah is less expensive than Florida, and provides the same states.

Here is a list of Out-of-state Certified Utah Firearms Instructors.

Gentleman by the name of Ray Ross did mine. He does his classes at the Preble County Fairgrounds and has range close by. We got a group together and he came to us in Middletown. Gave us a group rate too. $75 i think. One day class.
