Fellow Gunners (particularly Oklahomans),

This weekend a friend and myself are going to be traveling in Oklahoma, and I've been trying to read up on the gun laws. I figure I'll take an AR with me as I am too young to have a CCP and it's important for me to be armed as my buddy and I plan on sleeping in my car. I can't seem to find anything on carrying long guns in vehicles. Can you have it in the open? What if it's loaded? Would I be able to keep it loaded while we're sleeping in case some clown comes up on us at night?

Don't want to end up in jail or anything so I thought I'd check.

As always, thanks a lot for your input and happy shooting.

From experience (walking up on quite a few occupied vehicles with folks sleeping in them for one reason or other...) If you keep weapons in your car - keep them in the trunk, out of sight. While you're sleeping anyone (and I mean anyone...) might just come up on you while you're in dreamland - and there are a few nasty possibilities you don't want to encounter.. A cop showing up might just be a best case scenario late at night...

If weapons are needed, they're still accessible - but not until you've woken up and gotten a look at whatever's going on.... For my agency it was an iron clad rule that none of our officers woke up anyone - without having a backup on scene (and maybe more than one if the officer could see weapons in the vehicle..).

None of what I've described has anything to do with whether it's legal or not to have weapons in your car in one state or another -but I'll say again -it's very good practical advice...

In the trunk makes them inaccessible if he awakens to a threat and needs it right away.

I see where you're coming from but this statement is exactly why I don't want to keep it in the trunk. Though if somebody comes up on me it's likely a better course of action is to fire it up and drive off but you never know what's going to happen which is why I'm trying to prepare for the worst.

I emailed the attorney general and they responded very quickly saying it was a question for the OK bureau of Investigation. Still awaiting a response but as soon as I hear back I'll paraphrase it here for anyone else who may wonder in the future.

Of course it IS going to be a tad chilly in OK this time of year. Any reason not to sleep inside somewhere where it is warm?

Yeah it's gonna be a little chilly. Not much worse than here in NE though and I occasionally camp out in this kind of stuff. Don't know anybody in the area and I'm on a budget. Not to mention most hotels won't rent rooms to young'uns like us. We're just going to be roughing it I suppose. I'm going to have my tent though so it'd be nice to find some WMA land to stay on and then I wouldn't have to worry about any of this anyhow.

Transporting a loaded rifle in a vehicle is illegal in OK unless someone in the vehicle has a concealed carry permit.

Thanks, I saw these earlier. My confusion is with the word "transporting." Are you "transporting" a loaded firearm only if you are driving the vehicle down the road, or does that also apply to when it is parked? I don't know and I'm no lawyer.
