On The Topic of Back Up Guns

What is the frequency of people having to use a backup gun, and what is the failure rate in those incidents because of inadequate caliber, low capacity or contact-shot failure? I only know one person who had to use a backup in a shooting, a S&W 640, and he did not run out of ammo. While I think it is a good idea for people involved in high-risk situations to carry backups, I don’t think that the type of firearm, caliber or capacity matters that much. The Glock 42 is my current favorite for many reasons. Most important are that it is light, accurate and fun to shoot, and, consequently, I shoot it a lot. YMMV.
Agree..When I carry my G26 with G19 15R magazine, I can hardly keep my pants up as it is(muffin top)..I can't imagine carrying 2 HGs. I EDC a G42 during the summer, clothes dependent.

For those who move toward danger(LEO, Military, etc)..I think a BUG is a great idea. For those of us who will probably NEVER even pull the HG out, let alone use it..I think one is fine..

BUT shoot it often to ensure
-reliability
-accuracy
-fun-ness

For the gent who says he stays out of areas where he made need a handgun..pretty tough to be sure of that. 'It' can happen anywhere, anytime.

You know well the answer to that question. Nada.

Well then I hope that soon you can get the gun of your dreams and the back up gun to go with it. I struggled a bit to get my first gun too. Whats the gun you want the most to start a gun owning career?

One other thing: how would one "feel the need" to carry a BUG?

I have wondered the same thing every time I see a post about having a "Bug". I guess I have read the quote from Bill Jordan too many times where he stated "if you can't do it with six, six more probably won't help".

Yeah, well when you read these things you need to keep in mind that the man's name was Bill Jordan, not Bill Jesus.

Also that you're not Bill Jordan.

Other than as a job requirement, I have yet to "feel the need" to carry even one gun.

I carry because, should it come to when I actually do "feel the need", that will likely be sudden, unexpected, and very desperate.

The number of times one has heard it is not important. What is important is to not fall for it.

First off I never said I was Bill Jordan and never asked for your opinion to begin with. Welcome to my Ignore list.

I like Post #82.

I have needed a gun more than once.

On no occasion have I "felt a need" before the necessity materialized.

But so far, I have prepared when the need has arisen.

And my theory is = if you NEED a gun,and nothing short of an air strike will cover your problem, and then your ONLY gun takes that moment in history of being "perfect" to take a dump [ called Murphy's Law ] .

THAT IS THE MOMENT you grasp why it's called a NYC reload.

Example, your car can stop and you can most likely wakl.

Your blade can break [ unless its a matter of life & death ] and you can find a new one.

BUT if your USING YOUR ONLY MEANS TO SAVE YOUR LIFE ---- and it takes a dump ,now you see why a BUG !!.

I'd love an M60 in .308, but that's unlikely; so I'll go with a Ruger GP100 (.357 Mag, 4", SS).

I have shot an M-60 and it was FUN!!! I didn't even have to pay for the ammo. A couple of Texas National Guard guys had one at the Grasslands in Decatur Tx and let me shoot it. I shot at a dirt bank 200 yards away and the stuff was flying just like in the movies. That was a once in a lifetime shoot.
