I've been looking at compact polymer pistols lately to use as a CCW/Trail type gun and struggling with the decision between a M&P 40C, a Glock 29 or 30 or maybe even a sub-compact XD 40. I have recently decided that I may not be willing to give up the comfort or feel of the longer full-size grips in return for the concealibility of the sub-compact. I guess my real dilemma is that I really need to be looking at two guns, not one. I've ruled out the M&P 40C -just doesn't feel good in my hand; but the XD 40 sub-compact (which had been a distant 3rd choice) feels great with the extended magazine.

Now my title question:
I've always been interested in the Sig 225 and it's on my list of guns I'd like to own some day. My local gun store has a very clean P225 on consignment that I believe I could get for $375. It's comfortable to hold and I could CCW it for the time being. Eventually I could look for a polymer full size M&P (feels great in my hand!!!) or a Glock 20 or whatever would fill that niche at a later time and save a couple hundred dollars in the short run.

What do you think? P225 good idea/compromise? Bad idea/compromise? I'm looking forward to your opinions.
Thanks.

Darn good gun at a darn good price. I'd get it in a hearteat. I had a chance to get one many years ago at a good price when Sig was discontinuing them, around 2000 I think. I bought a CZ-75D PCR instead due to the ergos and greater capacity. However, for $375, its really a no brainer.

Many years later, I bought a used Sig P228, but I don't shoot it much. I think the P225 is basically a single stack P228.

I think it's a great idea.
I've been looking for a nice used 225 for quite a while.
I passed on a few that now I regret, due to price.
I wanted to like the 226, but I found the reach to the trigger and the blocky grip to be uncomfortable.
I ended up with a H&K P-30, which I love, but I never forgot the 225.
If the finish is decent, the price is good.
Is it a German Police trade in? The P-6?

Lately, I covet the new 225 polizi, which is German made, and comes with three mags.

I've never heard a bad word about the 225.
$375 puts that sale in the range of the used police trade in's.
If it's nice, go for it.
Even the police trade in's are a good deal, since the Euro cops don't seem to shoot much, so they have a lot of holster wear, but not a lot of mechanical wear.

I'd move on it quick

...

For what you want it for, it's already broke in (DA/SA) and the trigger pulls should be very smooth..

It's thin (relatively speaking) with its thinner full grip and 8+1 single stack mags loads are CA. compliant..

They're lighter because of this, balanced far more, being made in Germany, stamped, lighter slides and like most all later model Sigs, very forgiving, dependable, reliable, easy to field strip and take care of, along with grip options, sight options, great Sig CS for parts, etc., and will go the_distance..

For that price, being broke in, rdy to go, along with no worries about any holster wear, it should be there already, sounds like you've come along at the right time and should scoop it up asap before someone else does..

Oh, and btw, I'm scooping up one of the Police Specials, P228n/r NIB, Sig d-dot night sights, 3 mags that when I chked it out, pulled both the DA and SA trigger modes and felt its, already, smooooooth, action, it was a quick - done-deal - it's mine..

Great lighter weight, ccw/shooter, very balanced, 8+1 9mm's to be had IMHO..

Yes, in a heartbeat. I am carrying a P6 (German Police version). Very accurate, classic Sig pistol. Single stack mags make a great carry package. If you grow tired of it, go over to Sig Forum and put up for sale. It would not last long at that price.

There are some different issues to potentially consider.

What are you anticipating encountering that would require a handgun for defense? Criminal attackers? Feral animals? Large, thicker skinned dangerous animals?

What are the applicable laws for carrying firearms where you plan to go? (Of course.)

When I decide upon a handgun for dedicated defensive purpose when traveling in and enjoying rural areas I consider the nature of the threat(s) I think may be likely, then I choose a caliber I feel will be appropriate to my purpose.

Once I've decided upon a suitable caliber, then I consider if a special load needs to be selected to accomplish my perceived goals.

Then I consider the carry method I desire to employ for my activities. This may greatly influence the size of the weapon chosen.

Are there any specific conditions or situations which might influence my choice of the handgun platform or design? (Whether it should be revolver or pistol, as well as TDA, SA, DAO, etc.)

Once I've considered those things I'll look at any personal preferences I may have to see if it reduces or otherwise limits my choices. (Presumptive my skillset is appropriate to my decision. ;) )

I've chosen various manner of handguns, calibers and loads for various outdoor activities, conditions and situations.

Now, buying a used handgun has its own potential considerations when it comes to condition, as well as the manner of maintenance and support it may (or may not) have received from the precious owner(s).

Just some thoughts of my own ...

GET IT, or at least tell me where it is. My P6 was stolen in August along with my P220 and I really miss them both. The P220 was recovered, but the police have been holding it hostage since September.

Is it a P6 or a P225. That is a great price for a P225 not a great price for a P6. For a P6 it is a fair price.

Sig P225

If it is a P6 make sure it is a model made after 1991. These have an improved feeding ramp that will feed hollow points more reliably than the older guns. You can check the date code under the barrel. There should be a 2 letter date code.

I'm not a big fan of semis in general, but the P225 I had was a fantastic shooter. The P6 police versions I've seen have been more beaten up, but are still good. If you can get a true P225 for that price, do not hesitate.

If it is a P6, I think $375 is a little high.

I owned a 225 for a while. It is one of the darling guns of internet forums, and that is the main reason I bought it. It was mediocre in the accuracy department. It holds half the ammo of a G19, is about the same size, and costs more new.

I sold mine, realizing there was nothing special about it.

Very good advise. Thanks.

It is a P225. Is the 1991 date a consideration for the P225?

sooo i contacted sig directly to run their database to see if the p6 i purchased has been into the shop and figure out manufacture date they showed it neither being into the custom shop nor in their database. should i be concerned they said that their databases only range to 10 years.

no you should not be concerned. Check the side of the gun it should have a born on date on the slide.

I stated earlier in the thread that it will have a date code. It will not. It will have a date like this which was born on 12/83 if my eyes are correct.

Just an update: I ended up getting the 225 and like it so far. $380 was as low as the guy would go, but I feel that I did OK. I never pictured myself as a 9mm owner, but at least it's pretty cheap to shoot; probably can't save too much handloading. The gun has been 100% reliable so far, feels good in my hand, and shoots great! I still have a Glock 29 or 30 on my short list though.:D

All that's left now is to find a good holster -any recommendations for CCW?

There are lot of good holsters for the P225/P6.

Milt Sparks are great but will cost you 30% of what the gun cost you. $125+ LOL

High Noon makes nice stuff but again not cheap. $90+

Kramer is another great holster that is not cheap.... $100+

For a budget holster that will still get the job done I recommend Galco Summer Comfort which can be had NIW for $60.

I often look in forum classifieds... there are always LNIW stuff much cheaper than NIW. For examples this one.... Kramer IWB for $60

Although a nice gun in the hand I prefer the P239 that replaced it. Smaller package that loses nothing to the larger gun. JMHO.

Just in case everyone forgot, the 225's with the hook in the hammer were German police trade-in's. The purpose of the hook was for the superiors to be able to tell if the gun had been dropped on the hammer by accident. That little tab gets bent in. Then they knew the gun needed attention.

I have a p6 version (military vs commercial) and I absolutely love it, my personal opinion is id jump on that quick! Haven't had a single problem out of it yet lol, and if you are unhappy with its condition internally I found a website that sells a complete refresh kit with everything but the hammer spring, mine was made in 79 and it feels brand new

I bought a Sig P226 used from my son. I did not really want to buy a gun that day, but Trey was out of work and conned me into shooting it.

Good grief !!! Most accurate semi-auto I have ever shot; so I bought it on the spot, and 10 years later I still love to shoot it. Have never done anything to it except clean it. It is a West German trade-in, and shooting standing up at 25 yards, I can put em all in an 8" circle.

Not a glamorous gun, but very accurate for me.
