Assume that both open and concealed carry are legal where you live.

What do you do - carry openly or carry concealed.

Personally I'd carry concealed. Why advertise to the bad guy that you can fight back and thus give him the advantage of taking you out first.

There must be valid arguments for open carry though. Let's hear 'em.

I voted combination.

Out in the country, I'd just as soon that people with bad intentions leave me alone instead of forcing me to draw on them.

Besides, open is usually more comfortable.

Anyway, it shouldn't be illegal to untuck your shirt or put a coat on.

I voted for concealed carry. I believe in the element of surprise. By doing what our assailant least expects us to do, we may throw him completely off. What he usually least suspects is instant, counter-attack, so aggressiveness is closely tied to that of surprise.

The unexpected is disconcerting. A disconcerted felon is momentarily less in charge of his own thought than just before or just after. At that moment his victim may be able to turn the tables. I sure don't wnat a criminal to know I have a gun. The criminal does not expect his prey to fight back. May he never choose me, but , it he does. I'll suprise him:)

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, long-suffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness temperance: against such there is no law.

Concealed. Element of surprise and, maybe more important, maybe won't tempt some idiot to challenge you, forcing you where you don't want to go. I often carry open in the woods and used to carry open when I was involved in search and rescue. Local Sheriff's dept wasn't any problem; if in adjoining Co or State Police challenged us, we'd take our toys and go home, let them search. We never had any problem with LE, though.

It seems that sometimes it would be good to not let anyone know you're armed.
Other times, it would be good for the sheeple to see normal people out and about with firearms on their hips.

I voted for a combination.

Concerns over sheeple

Seems most answering here assume that if open and concealed were both options that sheeple would still exist who would be liable to freak out over open carry.

I don't buy it. We can't open carry here because sheeple freaked and made laws against it. If the law hadn't been made, it would be because people could face that reality.

I prefer open. I don't want to "surprise" a perp. I want him to see that I am armed and leave me alone for easier pickings.

Perps are generally out for money, or sometimes for fun. In neither case do they want to face an armed opponent (IMHO).

Depends why I'm carrying. If protection from humans, probably concealed. If protection from animals, open. Or I will when our benevolent government allows me to . 20 yrs old. Drive? Check. Get married? Check. Own long guns? Check. Join Marine Corps? Check. Handguns? Nope. :fire: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

Why should I have to assume this? They are both legal where I live.

My answer, however, is identical to TallPine's:

Combo, but almost always concealed. Open is legal - even for restaurants that serve alcohol. Llaw says no concealed there... figure that! We are working on that, though.

I don't get to the woods any more, but open would be my choice there.

Discretion is the soul of valor. No one needs to know who's armed, and I believe the open carry makes you a target in strange/woofti circumstances. Tho I believe that open carry is nothing to be ashamed of (and would do wonders for 'conditioning' the sheople), see point #1, above.

I'd wear it on my hip with just my shirt covering the grip. Don't care about someone seeing it, I just don't want to tuck in my shirt.

I like having the option to carry openly but I can count the number of times on one hand. Too many issues with brandishing to take the chance.
