Out of your loaded guns at home, what is the most serious?

If you have more than one loaded gun at home, do you have one that if things looked bad yo would grab? What I mean is, do you have different guns for different levels of threat?

I have a Beretta 92FS with 15rd mag if I feel like something is about to happen but I also have my S&W 642 by my bed because it is my CCW. Often, I will just grab the 642 if the dogs are barking or we get a late night knock at the door. It is small and light, I can slip it my pocket if it is someone at the door that I know or something. I might not grab the Beretta just to answer the door because if it is someone I want to let in, I don't want them to see a big handgun behind my back.

I can't imagine answering the door with a shotgun or an assult rifle. I do have those guns but for just checking out noises or answering the door, I think they are overkill. You end up looking and feeling like a jack-a$$ when you answer the door with an assult rifle and it is someone you know and they see it. Also, because you need to keep it behind the door, it is useless if someone suddenly kicks it in. All of a sudden, you are defensless! With a handgun, you tend to have it when you need it.

Kel-Tec on my person all the time. Sometimes as backup when out but always in house. If I needed something bigger I'd probably go to my Sig 228. Police response time here is fantastic. I could load up the shotgun quick enough but I think I am okay for now!

Watch, now some crazed lunatic will break through my door with body armor on!:uhoh: :D

Apart from my carry piece .... currently SP-101 or M28-2 .. I have numerous loaded guns available .. all bar one are handguns.

I doubt I would categorize threat too much ... but as far as door answering goes .. it'll be handgun only ... unless something is obviously very wrong. I will tho at times have a hand on the piece ... maintaining the ''availability'' factor to the max, but without display.

The one non handgun is a semi (I refuse to use the term ''assault'' ..... it is so over used) ..... usually AK .... with full mag but empty chamber ... it can be reached without too much hassle but would only come out in absolute ''extremis''.

Plus .. if my carry piece wasn't goin to solve a ''problem'' ... then I reckon anways that probably some excremental matter will be hittin the round whirly thing rather hard .... and so a moot point!:D

2 1/2" S&W M66 loaded with 158gr. +p 38's on the nightstand

18" 20g Mossberg with #4 shot in the corner of the bedroom

S&W M36 full of 125gr. +p 38 Special Gold Dots stashed near the front door

If I can't do it with that ....then I can't do it at all.

only 2 guns are always loaded and available.
G23 with 1 extra 13rd mag and a surfire
serious? 870 with +2 mag extension
any others are in the safe
My lighting and security layout means never having to say you're sorry.
I know who is at the door before they know if anybody is home and when I go to bed, the dog is on duty, the alarm is on and I don't need to investigate little bumps in the night. Its usually a coon on the porch knocking over a plant or sumthin anyway.

There's a Garand on top of the dresser thingy in the BR, with three loaded Danish Mil-Surp clips right beside it. The thought of shooting that thing indoors is more terrifying than a squad of hobgoblins from hell breaking in.

Otherwise, it's a Glock 20 with DoubleTap 165 gr Golden Sabers @ 1440 FPS in the nightstand, and a Benelli Nova with Ranger 00 buck in the closet.

Home Defense

I keep a Colt Python in reach of my bed and a 12 gague shotgun just under the edge of my bed

I keep .38s in the Python just because if I do have to use it I'd like to be able to still hear afterwards

I have a North American Arms .22 Magnum in my pocket right now.

It's more useful than the 10mm S&W 1006 which is in the other room.

presently the 835, IF someone I know is at the door, I can easily set it aside, beside the door, its normal for me to do that as dispatching strays is the norm around here,,,,

rock salt for the stray animals, SLUGS fer tha BoogieGuy...

The only time I have ever answered the door late at night I answered it something like this.

After looking through the peephole and saw a single man. I opened the door with my left hand about 3 inches and put my left foot against the door. Leaning all my considerable weight against it I doubt anyone could rapidly dislodge me. I held my rifle with my right hand behind the door and asked what the gentlement wanted.
Him: "Uhhh..is this where Amy's Party is...?"
Me: There is no party going on in here.
Him: "Is this XXXX Y street?"
Me: "No, this is XXXX Y+1 street."

He apologized for bothering me and left. If I was 21 I would buy a handgun, but until then, all I have are long guns and my shotgun is too long for practical defense.

Daedalus,
Great illustration! :)

I keep a USP .45 Compact handy at home for bump-in-the-night, knock-at-the-door situations. SO has a Bersa .380 handy at all times. An AR-15 is usually somewhere nearby (30 round mag also nearby but separate). In under 30 seconds, I could also have a loaded 629 or P7M8 or PM9 if needed.

Handgun: Glock 20, 150gr JHPs.

Rifle: Springfield M1A, 150gr FMJs.

Shotgun: Winchester 1300 Defender, 00 and 4 buck.

Whatever I'm using for CCW at the time gets the duty. So it's either the USP40c or the 1911. The one not being used is kept in a storage cabinet in condition 3.

I live in a studio apartment so my CCW is pretty much within arms reach at all times.

:D

I usually have three handguns sitting around the house loaded. I keep my Ruger Security Six by the door. 12 ga in the basement with buckshot and slugs, and my Stey M9 with night sights in the bedroom.

Where I live having a longarm handy for varmits is common, and no one who I would open my door to at night would be offended to walk in and see a rifle leaning next to the door (or in my hand for that matter).

for somthing to pickup to investigate noises, i have a :
1. sig 220 in upstairs closet
2. beretta 96 just inside door from garage
3. smith 696 as bedside gun

i guess i'm just partial to larger/slower calibres around the house. for serious work, i keep serveral mags for my ak-74 clone loaded

Well I always answer the door with a handgun usually a .357Mag, sometimes a .40 S&W Kahr or a 1911 in various different calibers - whichever one I most recently had out at the range.

I used to keep a FAL with 2 fully loaded mags nearby for "serious" threats, but now it's the .50 Beowulf.

This one:

No matter what my daily ccw was for the day, when Im lounging around the house I ahve my s&w 642 on me. If im investigating a wierd noise or checking something out, I try to grab my 12 ga 870.
