2015 SHOT Show...
Palmetto State Armory introduced the PSAK-47, which is a 100% USA made AK style semi-auto rifle with a chrome lined barrel.

Estimated release time frame is Q3 2015 with an estimated price of $600-700.

Former Army cool guy, Larry Vickers posted the following about the Palmetto State Armory PSAK-47 via social media...

"Hey Palmetto State Armory is showing a completely USA made AKM at their booth ( this sample has non US furniture ) - I know the guys that are making the parts for this and the quality is tops; parts are coming from a shop that has made parts for belt fed weapons for years. I'm looking forward to what else can be done in the AK series here in the USA - great things ahead !!!"

Over on AKfiles, someone said the barrel was nitrided, not chromed. I cannot not find any posted specs from PSA, do you by chance have a link to that because inquiring minds would like to know. :D (Me, I'm the inquiring mind, a PSAkm is certainly exciting)

I was just thinking about picking up one of the IO AKM247 rifles now being built in Florida. They are all American made, and are supposed to have nitrided barrels (although classic Arms states the barrels are nitrated ??). I'd be interested in the PSA, although when you can get the AKM247 for $475, I have to wonder what all the extra cash for the PSA gets you?

A rifle not made by IO. That's enough of a reason right there.

Looks nice. I hope they drive down the price in all AKs so I can get another Bulgy. As for me, you can keep the US AK stuff.
The salient objective of the military AK builders of eastern europe is to build a rifle to required specification so that it will run under any conditions.
Now the objective of a US AK maker is to cheaply as possible produce a sporting rifle and russian specifications are followed sometimes, sometimes not. They dont care if its the best they just want to produce something people will buy that wont self destruct reasonably soon. Its no accident that you pick up the cheapest romanian ak and the cheapest foreign milsurp mags and they run run run. Its called a spec package people. Each cheap saiga I ever bought had a SIGNED certifacate that the rifle met specs. If you are putting your nane on the line in a country where they have non stop trains to Siberia it has to mean something. And yes I am the most quoted man on the internet so go ahead.

Fair enough, I'm not an AK guy, the reviews on the AKM247 seemed pretty good, but they sure don't like the company over at AKfiles.

I think it's an earned reputation for making crappy rifles. A reputation can be redeemed however, but don't expect it to be overnight. Once WASR's were considered the worst of the AK world but after a few years of improving the rifles and fixing their shortcomings, WASR's are much more respected. However it's been a few years of producing good WASR's to begin to turn the image around.

I.O. may be able to turn their perception around and I always hope a company can make good, but they will have to accept they are going to face skeptics that have a good reason for being so.

This is a big leap forward . I have the Romanian SAR 1 made in 2002 for $320 . I since changed the trigger to Tapco G2. It shoots really smoothly. Im glad theres more acceptance of the AK 47 now in the US market. It seems the craze for the black rifle has reached its peak that most wanted something new.

It doesn't appear to have the optics rail. That's a major dealbreaker for me.

If you really want an optic on an AK the Texas Weapons System Gen 2 top cover rail is IMHO the way to go.

The side rail really only makes sense if you want comblock optics. I have the Kalinka red dot and several PSOP scope variations, they work, but the TWS works better in terms of eye box placement and gives lots more options.

I might give AKs another chance if they came with a good solution for a rear peep.

The TWS rail has a nice rear peep as an option, as does Tech Sights. Hardly a show-stopper.

While I like the idea of the TWS rail, its simply not as tough as the weapon it resides on. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aYdsL3zTFoQ

Any upgrade that can put a fighting gun out of commission vs the standard part is a no go for me.

However, with a side rail and a MI low Q/D mount, even if the optics/rail was damaged, with a simple flick of the q/d lever the rifle is still fully functional.

I quickly checked that out when this thread came up. Looked like well over $100 to mess around with. Maybe I didn't see the right thing thing. The peeps that replace the existing rear sight are not an option.

Edit. $180 at Brownells. As pointed out by Jackel, it doesn't look very robust. Not interested.

With PSA driving the bus I see a lot of US made AK variants coming our way.

It will be a good price control. While PSA AR is down to close to $400, their AK should be $350 or less. Shall we have RPK style windage adjustable rear sight!

I might even consider one if I can put the rear sight where it should've been in the first place. Sorry but no eastern bloc crap for me.
