Pet cat shot by police in bizarre ordeal

Bah I used to have a cat that would do this all the time. It was a female and could get rather "moody" around other females especially ones not of her species. A quick grab with some gloved hands and a toss down the basement steps with the door shut behind it for the rest of the night to let it calm down was all it needed. She was perfectly good for me though!

I used to have a cat that did that to me twice. Found out later he had feline leukemia. I suspect it affected his mindset and resulted in this violent behavior. Last time he did it, he was banished outside for about a week. He eventually came back home. Didn't have the heart to put him down despite being maimed by him.

I can't belive the cops didn't go into the basement to see what might have gotten the cat all wacko. Could've been rat poison or insecticide or daddy's meth lab.
:what:

Pardon? What about this incident gives an officer the right to search the family's house? I understand the sentiment, but I support the fourth amendment as much as I do the second, ninth, and tenth. The fact that the family's cat went insane - no matter how quickly - doesn't make them criminals.

I do apologize if I seem to be overreacting, but I see this kind of comment a lot (think war on drugs). To me it seems just like saying "well, he went to buy .50 caliber rifle...I can't believe the police didn't put him under permanent surveillance."

As my two cats are lounging in the computer room with me I couldn't imagine them going that nuts...but who knows. I don't think I could have went all 'Old Yeller' on them in the house...way too messy, plus I'm in an apartment. There is such a thing called a blanket which you throw on top of the cat and then can carry wherever it is needed. It worked pretty good when we introduced our second cat to our very territorial first can and they were tearing each other apart.

“We have heard stories about people not being able to leave their homes because their cat was blocking the doorway. So some cats can be aggressive.â€

I've got a size 12 steel toed boot that says none of our three cats would ever act this way.

What a weird story. My mom used to be a veterinary assistant. I'm going to ask her about the Feline Leukemia angle. Sounds like a good possibility.

Feline lukemia Tarpley? Did it also cause your kitty to poop all over the house like the subject of this story? Just curious and if yours did, it would appear to be the answer to why the Kat went Krazy.

We've had a cat or two go insane inside the house. I remember it was when I was elementary age. One of our outdoor cats got inside, then freaked out when it couldn't get out again. It was running and clawing and hissing and freaking out. Dad got up and got his Louisville Slugger (he isn't always a patient or soft-handed guy), when the cat went into the bedroom, dad cornered it and when the cat ran again he clocked it several times. It wasn't pretty :( Next thing we see is him walking outside with the limp cat in his grip.

Sometimes cats are sick, and sometimes they just get scared and wig out. In any case, that's pretty sad.

We've had to shoot cats before, and 22s don't always put them down on the first shot. Usually the cat will flop and twich around, growling and and such because its in pain. Then we'd point blank them in the ear to finish the job. Again, not pretty, but it was done.

How very bizarre.

Amen.

And can you imagine being the constable? Would you risk permanent hearing damage to put down an 8-lb cat? Or do you suppose he stopped to put in ear plugs?

I think that most police departments could benefit from a little in-service training on animal control and behavior.

"And can you imagine being the constable? Would you risk permanent hearing damage to put down an 8-lb cat? Or do you suppose he stopped to put in ear plugs?"

From the article (emphasis mine): "While it ran wildly around the interior of the brick bungalow, the cat continued shrieking... 'You could actually hear the cat screaming from the other side of the street,' he said."

Methinks if he didn't, his hearing would already be gone.

TheFederalistWeasel, you owe me a new monitor. :) Although I must admit, never before have I laughed so hard yet felt so bad about it. :uhoh:

Here is the original link apparently it took place in Canada: http://www.intelligencer.ca/webapp/sitepages/content.asp?contentID=98953&catname=Local+News

I'm just kind of in awe over this whole thing...I see many problems, the first was the use of a gun instead of another mean to end this situation (and I'm NOT an animal rights activist by any stretch of the imagination).

Second, this cop shoots the cat and then lets it wither and die painfully for 5 minutes in the bathtub, sorry, but if you are such a big man to shoot an 8lb cat you had better have the little boys to finish the job when it is not killed right away. 5 minutes is way too long to let an animal wither and die, if someone saw a vet do something like this the vet would lose his license. I've had horses and dogs put down, it sucks, but it has to be humane.

Third, the officer was in no direct threat from the cat...the children and mother were out of the house. The owner was afraid of the cat getting into the crawl space...sorry excuse.

Two weeks ago, authorities removed nearly two dozen large cats, including lions and tigers, from property rented by Abby and Emma Hedengran not far from the library, Bernard said. All the animals that inspectors found on the property were accounted for, she said.

Would the generous way to interpret this be that the authorities didn't lose any they removed, or should we just assume the lady spoke stupidly?

"Chief, we found 8 animals on the property."

"Great, how many can we account for?"

"umm, eight?"

"Fantastic Bernard, put yourself in for a commendation."

Hey control, good point about the lack of PC search the basement for drugs. I guess the LEO could just ask. I've been told by BLET instructors that people who are asked for consent to search and know they have illegal items still give consent the majority of the time. However that family seemed far too cooperative and understanding of the whole situation to be the drug cooking type.

Hey, thats a great idea! (noted)

And *thwap* or two against the floor could accomplish the same thing as my 590 with very little noise or mess.

Agreed. I dont know why I didnt notice that earlier.

For those who think the officer went to far in shooting the cat, the owner said:
He asked the officer to, if given the chance, put the animal down.
That said, I think the husband could have ended the situation himself with a bat, shovel, or anything handy.

That is one tough little kitty to take a .40 and keep on goin.

I feel sorry for the cat's suffering, but when you have an animal acting strange, you want the head intact so that they can do the rabies test.

5 minutes isn't actually that much. I think about it this way. When hunting with a rifle, after you shoot the deer and it runs off, how long are you supposed to wait before following? In my hunter's safety class the answer was "30 minutes". Also, given that we want the head intact, and the cat is acting strange, how did they pinpoint the time of death? Did somebody have a stopwatch, or did they just know it was less than ten minutes, but more than a minute?
