--------------------------------------------------------------

So today is Father's day, and I went to my local state fair gun show hoping to find a Makarov for my father for home defense. Obviously, I didn't find a Makarov but instead picked up a used Beretta. Yeah, I bought another gun, and even though I cannot afford to eat out for like the next 10 years...

It was a used PS Beretta 92FS with tritium night sights being sold by an elderly gentleman in his 80s, who could hardly talk or walk. He was a decent guy though. But anyway, I picked it up for $450 total. It was in excellent condition with 99% of originial blueing and excellent bore, etc.

Here are my two questions:

1. My friend also has a 10 yo Beretta 92FS but his slide has the beretta "three arrows" brand stamped on the it. My gun has this weird "PS" logo stamped on it and with a "beretta USA", next to it. The grip however does have the "three arrows" logo.

2. What the heck is wrong with the chamber loaded indicator? I load a snap-cap in the chamber, and the chamber loaded indicator (see picture three) does not protrude out at all! Then when I pulled the trigger, the indicator protruded out for a 1 sec and then went back in as the hammer hits the firing pin. I disassembled the gun, and tested the switch, it seemed to work fine.

This chamber loaded indicator resembles the firing pin disconnector switch found on the walther P38 and Taurus PT92, and now I am wondering whether this piece is in fact a chamber loaded indicator, or is it a firing pin disconnector switch connected to the trigger.

Any input will be appreciated!

So the question remains:

what is that "PS" logo? I didn't see it on any other new Beretta 92FS...

The "chamber loaded indicator" is the extractor, a little lower and forward.
When the gun is new, there is a little red dot that shows when there is a shell in the chamber. Not the easiest thing to see, but you can feel it. It's flush with the slide if empty.:) It means it's time to reload.

It appears to stand for "police special", according to what I found here: http://www.packing.org/oldtalk/thread/?thread=41642.

on the left side of the slide, there is a "badge" with "PS" inside it as part of the rollmark
...
and a badge that says "Beretta Police Special."

I couldn't find anything else about the police specials besides various examples for sale. However, and I'm guessing here, could it have something to do with the 15-rd magazines that come with it? Perhaps during the AWB days they sold the gun under that brand to distinguish it from the handicapped versions we civilians could buy.

Someone who knows please feel free to correct me.

I called Beretta USA today to find out about this.

I was told that my gun was made in 1996, and PS is "police special", and it came with tritium Trijicon night sights and 3 15-rd magazines (probably a pre-ban thing).

I was pretty impressed because for a 10 year old gun, this piece has all its Brunition finish remaining as well as all the alloy anodizing finish remaining.

Need to find out how well it shoots this Friday.

Edit: Okay, I will find out how well it shoots today, i.e. Monday. haha!

Why would you want to shoot Friday? Friday's one of my favorite days of the week. Friday means Saturday is just around the corner.

If you want to shoot a day of the week, shoot Monday. I've never liked Mondays. It's hard for me to get back into the corporate groove on Mondays. Especially after a really fun-filled Friday/Sat/Sun.

So do us all a favor and leave Friday alone.

Umm, if it's 1996, it's definitely a post-ban (but pre-post-ban) thing, since the ban started in 1994 until it hit the sunset. Probably the mags were originally marked LE Only.

The PS does stand for "Police Special". They made them prior to the 1994 ban as well. I have had mine since around 1991. They did not ship those in the hard plastic cases but a card board box with a glossy sleeve with a picture of a badge as I recall. I would have to go digging in the closet to find the old box. Just a marketing gimmick, but they could sell them a smidge cheaper with the cheaper cardboard box. I like mine.

Retro is right about the firing pin block.

PX4 Guy. The little block that lifts up on the top of the slide when you pull the trigger is not a loaded chamber indicator. It is in fact the firing pin block that is lifting as you pull the trigger to clear the way for the firing pin.
