Picking a trail gun: big hogs in the mix 10MM or .45 Super?

Protection.

If I was hunting hogs, I'd be using something that would pretty much flatten em. Don't like wounding, or chasing wounded animals.

Gary Reeder had some tape of one of his guys hitting a big pig with a .475 Linebaugh, and I guess the pig never read the press clippings that the .475 was supposed to put him down with 1 shot. Took 5. Stubborn, uneducated pig.:uhoh:

Between 10mm and .45 Super I'd go with Super. The terminal energies are about the same but the .45 throws a chunk of lead almost 1/16" larger in diameter. The availability of various bullets in .45 is astonishing if you reload as well. And of course, as you know, any gun setup for Super will still shoot regular .45ACP ammo as well. If you don't want to beat on the gun running thousands of rounds of .45ACP with a heavy recoil spring just swap it back to stock for range use.

Oh, come on. This is the High Road. Use your imagination, and you might figure out what kind of pigs I'm likely to face. Or, visit your local federal or state pen.

How about the LAR Grizzly in a 44 magnum... A discontiued pistol, but very awesome IMO. Looks like a 1911 on steroids, action is just about identical to any 1911, just bigger, And lots of thump.... I had a chance to get one over the recent holidays, but do to a budget and holday season spending, I had to pass... I wish I had the opportunity again, it was an awesome pistol.

If I was buying a gun to be my trail gun it would be a Glock in 10mm ! If I\had to use whatI have I would feel comfortable with my Glock 30 sf in .45 acp ,or my speed six in .357 ! With hogs it isnt so much what you shoot them with as it is where you shoot them ! They are tough , but they arent bulletproof ! Kevin

If this is a defensive piece against two-legged predators, you don't need tons of penetration.

If you are shooting at swine, with the right bullet selection, anything .357 Magnum and up is fine.
