For a personal weapon owned by someone not on duty, or not currently employed as a LEO, it would seem to me that the only concern would be the effectiveness and comfort provided by previous training and old habits deeply ingrained, should those still be satisfactory to the individual involved. If the 'old ways' are not comfortable enough, adjustments should be made until the individual involved is happy with the current arrangements.
I can see a lot of reasons for slavishly abiding by official training when 'on the job' and off, but if there is no longer any official connection - then it can be blank slate time, if the individual involved wants it to be.
In short, there is no "One Way" of the shotgun to be offered that I know of. And there are a pretty short list of absolutes, too. About four, if you count 'em up . Beyond that it's practices and procedures, and everyone likes to work out what they consider best.
