There are probably as many different definitions of 'cruiser ready' as there are people using the term. We've talked about it before ...

And "official procedures" cannot always keep Murphy at bay -

For a personal weapon owned by someone not on duty, or not currently employed as a LEO, it would seem to me that the only concern would be the effectiveness and comfort provided by previous training and old habits deeply ingrained, should those still be satisfactory to the individual involved. If the 'old ways' are not comfortable enough, adjustments should be made until the individual involved is happy with the current arrangements.

I can see a lot of reasons for slavishly abiding by official training when 'on the job' and off, but if there is no longer any official connection - then it can be blank slate time, if the individual involved wants it to be.

In short, there is no "One Way" of the shotgun to be offered that I know of. And there are a pretty short list of absolutes, too. About four, if you count 'em up :D. Beyond that it's practices and procedures, and everyone likes to work out what they consider best.

Shawn, your vehicles do not lock the slide into place? It is possible to cycle the action while secured?

Depends on the kind of weapon bracket. I got to peak in a friend's cruiser when he was off duty. The bracket held his shotgun just behind the front sights with no second clamp toward the bottom, supposedly to avoid hitting it with the leg in the passenger seat. He made the futile attempt to improve cruiser ready in his precinct by allowing a shell to sit on the loading arm outside the magazine. With a simple forward stroke of the slide to put the shell in the chamber instead of the full 2. Didn't get very far with the idea.

Gotcha.

And Fred, that is correct. I haven't been armed in any "official" capacity since...jeez...2009. So the last time I trained (as in with a trainer, on a course, etc.) was over 4 years ago. I am definitely one of those people who believe that training is at least as valuable as having a weapon. I'm always dismayed by guys who own 15 varients of ARs yet have never attended any sort of training, but I digress. So the short story is I need to get back into training on some kind of routine schedule BUT since I am no longer operating under the constraints of policy, maybe it's time for this old dog to learn some new tricks.

As for the definition of "cruiser ready", I think it changes from department to department.

Now onto my next thread...why I transitioned from Remington to Mossberg.
