I'm hoping this is generic enough to stay in the General Discussion area as it is not exactly holster related.

I just bought a 2015 Chevy Silverado “All Star Package” with the center console that flips up and converts into a seat, although I wouldn’t want to sit on it. The bottom part, the part you would sit on, is a lockable storage compartment. I want to be able to store a medium sized pistol in that lockable compartment but, it is too shallow to mount a holster with the barrel pointed straight down or even severely canted. If I simply lay a pistol in the bottom of the compartment it wastes a lot of valuable storage space because you wouldn’t want your pistol buried in there with a bunch of other stuff, including stuff that might find its way into a trigger guard. So I am looking for solutions for storing a pistol during those times I can’t carry the pistol on my person, like while I am at work but want it while driving/commuting. I only see two options and one option will require fabrication/rigging. I’m open to comments.

Solution #1. Buy a Liberty Safe pistol vault. This is a wedge shaped locking storage vault that I would have to drill into the floor of a brand new truck to mount. Link to Liberty Safe: http://www.libertysafe.com/handgun-vault-hd-200-quick-vault-ps-36-pg-125.html

Solution #2. Attach a holster (unknown brand/style/design) to the underside of the lid so it is oriented with the barrel facing straight down when the compartment is open. This would hold the pistol above any items stored in the bottom of the storage compartment and covers the trigger. This will require either fabricating multiple straps that wrap completely around the lid to hold said holster in place or figure out how to remove the upholstery and probably the padding from the console lid/seat bottom so I can attach screws to mount the holster then get the padding and upholstery reinstalled correctly and looking like brand new. I have looked all over the internet and cannot find a schematic or instructions on removing and re-installing the upholstery.

I have seen the console vaults but all those do is drop a lockable vault into the storage cavity which again wastes a ton of interior storage space.

State law does not permit the under the steering column holsters or the ones that attach to the front of the driver’s seat. While not specifically mentioned in the state laws our State Law Enforcement Division, the entity who regulates concealed carry in our state, told us instructors during a training meeting that these devices would not pass muster if challenged in court.

Any suggestions?

Cut a piece of foam the same size as the compartment.
Lay the foam over everything else and lay the pistol on the foam.
It works good in my wife's SUV.

Interesting idea. Simple, inexpensive, no damage to new vehicle. The only downside I see is it would be slightly inconvenient when you wanted access to the stuff under the foam but definitely an option.

I only use it when I go somewhere I can't carry like the post office,
Dr. office, Hospital' well you Know where we can't carry in SC.

It is an absolute shame that anyone who wishes to carry a sidearm is now forced to leave it in their vehicle instead of strapped on their belt where it can actually be used. I have had so many vehicles broken into I will never leave a loaded gun in one. And if I ever desperately need my gun what good is it if it's locked in my vehicle? It might as well be home in my safe.

Drail - I live 34 miles from my workplace. My workplace is a non-permissive environment. Not having a firearm available during my daily commute is not an option for me. I do believe having it available in the truck is better than leaving it home in my safe. Please note I am talking about locking it in either the lockable storage compartment or the purpose built pistol vault in case of break-ins. I suppose the next argument is you wouldn't work in a non-permissive environment. That is your choice but given my 30 years of experience in the same career and my lack of formal education in a marketable field I can't replace my level of income in any other field. There are numerous places in SC one cannot carry a concealed weapon so I can either limit the number of places I go or look for options like the one I am seeking here so I can properly secure a firearm when I can't carry it inside.

So, I see lots of people reading this post but only one suggestion so far. Surely someone else out there has a similar storage challenge and has addressed it.

Try this.

Sadly, they don't make a vault for the type of center console I have in my 2007 Dodge Ram 1500.

I use an inexpensive lock box (about 49.00) that is stored under the seat and attached to the seat with a laminated steel cable.

It won't stop someone equipped with bolt cutters, but it is sufficient for smash and grab type vehicle burglaries

MarkDido - Yes, I've seen those but once installed you loose the entire lower storage area, about 12x12 inches of valuable storage space just to store one handgun. That seems like a huge waste of space. The bottom storage area on the Silverado locks, I was just trying to find a better way of securing the pistol in that area without abandoning the rest of the storage space.

I'm really surprised no one else with a Silverado/Sierra has pondered this question or is willing to share their solution. Maybe I should have said I was trying to stash a Glock in there or better yet titled the thread "How Do I Store My G19 In A Silverado Console?"

My console vault (for tundra) doesnt waste any space, it fits the entire console.

I then mounted a serpa holster into the console vault so the gun is locked in tightly.

Not sure I understand what the issue is for the silverado

I tend to drive smaller vehicles and those tend to come with map pockets in the door panels. A few have been designed in such a way that even sitting in the passenger or driver's seat, you cannot tell my snub 642 was in there (MINI) was the best for this. Perhaps your vehicle is similar? Otherwise, I like the foam idea - simple. The car door works especially good for me as I am LH.

DO NOT FOR ANY REASON ALLOW ANY FIREARM TO BE KEPT IN AN UNATTENDED VEHICLE. In 33+ years of police work I took many stolen firearm car prowl reports, including guns stored in vehicle 'safes'. Many, if not most, of those guns were loaded. INEXCUSABLE!!!! KEEP IT ON YOUR PERSON OR KEEP IT SECURED AT HOME.

Sometimes that is not an option bud. Your all caps emphasis really isn't needed.

In my truck, I also have a lockable center console, but mine is hidden under the Middle seat. I have no issues putting my holstered firearm in there if I can't carry it.

Usually stays there while I am at home (garage parked) so that I know it is ready to go the next day when I leave the house.
