All of the above

Enabler!

I’m almost shocked at this point that no one has dug into the Smith vs Ruger, vs. on and on. Seems every 4 or 5 threads someone is bashing new production or Lock Smiths, then Ruger actions, then Colt pops up with a caveat about price.

I'm going to speak heresy -

I've recently taken stock of my firearms, and can honestly say the I'm lacking nothing. There are some gaps in long guns, but I can kill anything I hunt with what I have. Too, I'm not into big recoiling rifles. Handguns.... well, I gotta stop buying handguns. I can't shoot what I have.

So, when I get spare (!) cash, I'm going to start purchasing sights. Red-dot; holographic, tube, whatever. My eyes are getting older (along with the rest of me), and I want to keep shooting, and hitting what I'm shooting at.

All that being said, I think everyone should have a .357 revolver, if only for the sheer versatility.

I can see a crossroads in the distance so I’m preparing JIC. Having logged 140 hours of OT at work this month and currently working on another ~100+ hour stint has me pondering a selfish purchase. A little background for clarity: bills are paid, no credit card debt, saving with a double retirement so no other money woes. That first $3500 went toward family obligations like summer vacation being prepaid and a new balcony/deck. The wife and kids got 4 of the last 5 firearms and she bought a new car (I fixed mine up and it runs fine).

Soooo...I was thinking I might give myself a budget of $1,200 to border on DW 1911 territory but could easily stay at $400 used territory and play it safe. Been looking over a year at Sauer 100 rifles, but honestly I have enough of everything from centerfire to rimfire to black rifles to 1911s, cc pistols, and muzzleloaders to last me till the grave.

If it were you though, and the windfall was waiting, what would you choose and why? I know everyone is partial to one thing or another, perfectly fine to say so.
Out of the choices you present, I would suggest an S&W revolver in 45 Colt. Not just for range fun, but also as a solid companion for outdoor adventures.

However, if I were in your situation, I would use $500 of that money to buy a bubbaed 1909 Argentine for a future project and the rest to put a Vector Arms MP5 pistol clone on layaway.

If I had a spare 1200 bucks that my car or girlfriend didn't call dibs on first (I swear both have cash radar), I'd get a used S&W in either .38 or .357, just because I could use one. The rest would go on ammo for it and my other shooting irons and I'd call it good.

I know it is not on your list so forgive me but my Grail gun would be a S&W Model 57 41mag. I don't know why I find this gun so intriguing but I do.

A 10mm 1911 for me. It's already on my wish list. Of course another AR is always fun too!!

What I would chose has nuttin' to do with what you might chose. This is why I never understood these "which gun should I get?" threads. For the most part, I think they a just an attempt from the OP, to get some form of validation for their personnel choice. My question is, why does one needs others to endorse a choice that is not based on quality, reliability or value? While the questions of does this firearm have enough accuracy for my purpose, or is it durable enough for hunting in harsh conditions, etc, etc, are legitimate, the question of which gun to get for ships and giggles, or just cause I have money burning a hole in my pocket........ baffles me. If it's an impulse buy, then impulse it should be. If it's a researched buy for a long-term investment, what does anyone else have to do with it? We're given very little to no information on what you preferences are, how/where/what you hunt, or what constitutes a range session to you. Yet we are supposed to suggest or validate a choice for you? A used S&W or a new Ruger? Why not a new Smith or a used Ruger? In similar platforms, Ruger new prices are as much as new Smiths, but used Rugers generally go for much less than used Smiths. Hard for me to understand your priorities.

You worked hard. You earned some extra cash. I ain't trying to condescend or dis you. I'm just saying get what you want, for whatever reason you have. Get what trips your trigger and what fits into whatever niche you need to fill. Enjoy your choice and shoot it safely. You don't really need us for that. In the past, I bought things(yes, guns too) to impress others. Nowadays, at my age, I buy things that impress me. I've found in the past that just as many times where I have been happy using the validation of others, I was disappointed because I didn't get what I really wanted.

I disagree. Your experience or another forum member’s experience may well save me from a terrible choice. Those same experiences may also lead me to pursue a firearm I had not thought about or an entirely different idea. Does the PMR-30 really have feed problems? Are all new S&W revolvers lacking QC? Is hunting deer better with .45LC or 10mm? If picking others’ brains is validation then I am looking for it.

For instance, I learned to reload many decades ago on a Dillon press so I’ve contemplated buying something to replace my two single-stage presses. I’ve thought long and hard about a new Black Widow bow. Once upon a time I thought having a 16” Powermatic bandsaw would really tie the shop together. I may very well do nothing at all with the money, but I’m dreaming here and so are others, so what’s the harm in a thread to spitball things out?

My apologies if I seem overly gruff, it’s now been 60 hours since I clocked in at work and another 45 minimum to go before I head home.

I voted none of the above. My choice would be old Colt .357 police revolver that used Colt Python lockwork. Very smooth action on gun that can still be found for under a grand. This is where knowing what you're looking at helps. Most with $1000 or less will fall for S&W K, L, N-frame.

I have a S&W M10-3 4" HB in Nickel (Dad's Police Aux Weapon) from 1961, Dan Wesson M15-2 6" made in Monson. Unless someone tried to sell me a Python for way less than going rate I'm set on Mid-Frame Revolvers.

GP100? Not really. Maybe an SP101.

Rifles? Got all I need. From .223 Rem to .404 Jeffery. AR's I tend to assemble, test then get bored with but I have a lifetime supply of receivers so need to buy any more.

Occasionally I will see an old Win M92 or 1873 Colt that cranks my tractor and is within my price range.

That said something will bite like a really nice old Star BM or a 1911 (Like a Tussey Custom) that I must have. Might be $200 or $2,000.

Know the feeling all too well! Had one with a 4" barrel and a super slick action. Sold it for some much needed cash. Still have the reloading components I bought for it in the hope that someday I would get another Model 57.

And don't even get me started on the Model 58 I had as well.

I voted the 10mm 1911. I recently bought the Ruger 1911 in 10mm, and find it a lot of fun to shoot. However, like so many here, I have a suggestion that is not listed. With a little patience, you can find a used Freedom Arms revolver. Pick any caliber you like to shoot. Most of us clock punching ilk have to "settle" for less than the "best" in most anything we buy. This would be a time you could actually get the "best".

If you dont have a AR get one. If you already do then stock up on more ammo. If you already have boatloads of that then do what I'm going to do next.

A Ruger MKIV Hunter. Not much more cheap fun can be had from such a beautiful pistol.

Carry cash in your pocket and buy what ever catches your eye first you don’t need anything so practical impractical it doesn’t matter but yourself a smile

-Another heretic here.
I voted for the mutant 1911, although I think that all of these choices sound like giggle fodder.

My gun collection has surpassed the century mark and the last noticeable empty slot was recently filled by a very nice Garand.
My income keeps increasing and my debts are reaching the vanishing point,
I'm quite satisfied with my scruffy little house and my battered old truck.

Life is good - maybe I'll look into a mutant 1911, too.

I voted for the used S&W revolver. I won’t recommend any certain model. That’s for you to decide. There is nothing like the look and feel of an S&W revolver. :D

I've already got two DW 1911 10mms.. Heck, I'd go for another one. Right handy sidearms, they are.

Skylerbone:None of your comments seem to mention ammo. Apparently it would never be an issue, even with an unspeakable tragedy (Not an election) which could immediately result in a 'no-notice' panic.

My five active rifles and eight handguns (seven active) don't need any new companion.
You have already deduced that my "gun cash" is spent only to preserve a good stash of ammo for trouble which can Not be predicted.
