Just bought a couple boxes of Winchester Ranger T (RA40T and RA9124TP) to test at the range and use for carry ammo....but this is first time I've bought ammo where each round did not look exactly the same....

http://imgur.com/a/17KbO

In picture one...look in the hollow point cavity. In picture 2....look at the bottom (is that the primer) they are different colors on some rounds...

Is this normal for Winchester ammo? Nothing else (federal, speer, etc) has ever looked like this...

Those almost look like someone's reloads. I have never seen any factory ammo like that, unless it was like 50 year old surplus.:scrutiny:

It looks as if Winchester has changed some componants and your box is a mixture of old and new. Something is not right. Contact the company

look at the cases

for scratches from magazines and sizing dies.
are the primers all the same in depth?
if you had some fired cases or reloads to look at as samples.

hope this helps

There was a recall on bonded 180 gr Winchester ranger "t" series. Not sure if this is it or not. The recall was due to a batch of brass without the fire hole between the primer and powder. You wouldn't be able to see if it was one of those without pulling the bullet and dumping the powder. This is probably another issue, but it'd be best to call and see if there's any issues with your lot number.

A couple of those primers have little dings in them. They do NOT look like factory ammo to me.

Only one picture showed up for me, the one looking into he hollow point cavity. The bullet on the left isn't a Ranger bullet. All the Ranger bullets I've seen look like the one on the right. There should be a little star looking pattern where the "petals" of the jacket meet. It's possible some wrong components were mixed up at the factory. Whether that is the case or if you bought someone's reloads, I wouldn't risk shooting them. If it was a component mix up there's no telling what else could be wrong with them. If they are reloads there's no telling what could go wrong with them.

That looks wrong. Where was the ammo purchased? Gun show? FTF deal?

Looks like someone sold you a box of reloads. The only question remaining would be if it was done by mistake or on purpose.

One of the customer reviews of this same ammo on ATG mentions similar variations in the color of the brass. Something doesn't sound right here.

Did you buy them at a gunshop? Someone might have swapped some out or they could have been traded in and someone didn't notice.

Factory seconds?

If an LE contract doesn't meet spec manufacturers will sometimes dump the lot on the civilian market.

The only primer in your box that looks suspect is the one in the upper left; the rest just look like they've gotten tarnished to various degrees. All the Ranger T ammunition I've seen uses brass colored primers with nickel cases. That's not unusual.

As for the picture of the hollowpoints, it looks like the one somehow got jacketed inside the cavity. Otherwise the shape of the bullet and the petals look the same. Another clue that what you bought might have been LE contract rejects sold as factory seconds.

could be Seconds, could just be whatever it was that my co-workers and i kept seeing with the 9mm and .40s&w PDX1 loads when i worked at the local Academy. we never got an answer on that, but we (and our customers) found several boxes with primers ranging from discolored to downright massively corroded (one was so eaten away it had a hole in it! :what: kinda makes an impression when ya see that)

my thought are that it's a one or more of the following, 2nds from a LE contract, a batch made on a friday or otherwise at the end of a production/maintainence cycle, a mixture of batches/lots in one box.

A couple of those primers have little dings in them. They do NOT look like factory ammo to me.

the dings I see in that pic look consistent with having been fed, seated, etc with equipment that was in need of a cleaning, but are within reason for factory ammo.

as for the cavity shot, I can't be sure but looks to me like two related but different bullet styles. but it could be the difference in lighting angle

I put a couple of these rounds through the wet phonebook test and I uploaded a picture of the results:

The one on the left is the 9mm and on the right is what happened to the 40 cal. If I was you guys I would check your Ranger T's or quit buying these rounds.

Winchester pistol ammo has gone to crap. DO NOT BUY IT.

Winchester is playing some serious cost cutting, and quality cutting, games, in moving their production and using labour that doesn't know what they are doing.

I don't shoot THAT much, and I haven't bought THAT much Ranger, but I've already had three distinctly different, serious, problems.

I bought a case of RA9B that is crap. You can see which row has the junk hollow points vs the row from a good batch.

Here is an RA9TA that failed to fire, and you can see why:

Here is an RA45T that was likewise damaged/deformed out of the box:

I contacted Winchester about these but they don't seem to care.

STOP BUYING WINCHESTER PISTOL AMMO

Just curious, where did you buy the ammo from?

Three different rounds from three different sources.

And I am FAR from the only one noticing that Winchester Pistol ammo has gone down the crapper. Not that we shouldn't expect it, given what Winchester is doing with the production of it.
