Westernfield M550CD 20 ga. - According to this site I believe it's a re-branded Mossberg 500. It is a single action bar - holds 5 2 3/4" shells in the magazine.

Sometimes when the action is cycled (most often when the magazine is full, but sometimes on the second or third cycle) two shells are relased from the magazine. The magazine spring has been replaced and "adjusted" according to instructions found on this site (inserted it into the magazine and cut it off several coils past the end of the magazine tube).

I've watched the action to see what is happening and the cartridge stop and cartridge interrupter appear to be moving as they should. It seems to happen more frequently if I cycle the action slowly than it does when I cycle the action quickly.

Could the magazine spring be too strong? Could something be worn? Any other ideas?

Not much it can be but your cartridge stop and cartridge interrupter. Those are the two bars with the sharp ends that let the shells out one by one. Chances are they're either a bit worn or one or the other got a tad bent.

Your parts.

Pick those up, clean them off really well and oil them a bit and then replace yours. 99% chance that simply changing those parts will fix your prob with nothing else needed. If not, or you simply want to try to fix yours before replacing them, jerk the stop and interrupter out and *CAREFULLY* bend them just a hair so they hook the shell bases better.

If you need anything else, W, just whistle.
