I shot in the Prado Fall Sporting Clays League last night. I did OK on some of the stations. However one station that had true pairs quartering away, KICKED MY BUTT. I came away with a 3 and was happy to get that.

The 2 birds started out about 15 yards off to my right at 2 o’clock. They crossed in front of me at about 10 to 15 feet off the ground and kept going out.

Anybody have any advise on how to hit these buggers?

When I have trouble with targets like this it is because I am starting my swing too far back towards the launcher and end up shooting in front of the targets. With quartering away targets, I like to hold my gun closer to where the target is going to break, look back at the where the birds first appear, track them with my eyes then mount and shoot a much more compact swing while shooting almost directly at the bird or a little in front. Shoot it like a low house 5 or 6 at skeet.

With the true pair, shoot the second bird first and then swing into the first bird. Watch the birds fly, short swing, second bird first and then onto the first bird as quickly as you can.

Let me know if that works.

Paul nailed it. Most clays are missed behind, IMO quartering targets are oft missed in front.

Also, quartering targets are dropping while some give the illusion of level flight.

Personally, I note I've a tendency to shoot these in the butt. When I CONCENTRATE (there's that word again!) on putting the center of the pattern through the center of the leading molecule of that clay, I do better.
