Question about Savage MK II rifles. (Updated with pic - I caved)

I've been in the market for a .22 bolt rifle for a while now and I was at one of my local shops today and there was a new Savage MK II model BRJ (heavy barrel and laminate stock) for $300. Savage's website has these MSRP for $500.

I was really close to buying this rifle but the action seemed very tight and not smooth at all. Is that common for these rifles? Is it something that will break in over time? I'll probably go back for this rifle if it will work itself out over time. I liked everything else about it but wasn't sold on the action.

What do you guys think?

Thanks for your input.

So I went back and scooped up this rifle while it was still there. The action isn't nearly as bad as I thought I remembered it. I'm very pleased with this purchase. Just over $300 after tax. I'll be putting a Leupold 4-12 Rifleman on it next week and take it out to see what it's got!

I bought my mk2 last black Friday. After about 2k rounds through it, it really worked itself out. The action is reallt smooth and it shoots really well.

If that model doesn't have the accutrigger, I highly recommend doing a trigger job. I love mine after the fact.

I have both a sporter and a target version of the MKII. Both are very accurate with the right ammo but do lack the quality feel of a more expensive rifle. That being said, my HB Savage mkII is my favorite rifle to shoot. With target ammo (Wolf MT in mine), it will be able to pick off 9mm cases at 50 yards.

I have a BV (heavy barrel, laminate stock) that I bought from Cabela's last year. I'll second what others have said - the bolt will work itself out and end up pretty slick. All you have to do is shoot it. You give up something in fit and finish vs. say, a CZ, but Savage rifles will shoot well - mine will put ammo it likes into around 1.5" at 100 yds.

I've had a MkIIG for about 15 years (pre-AccuTrigger), and it's been a great squirrel gun. As others have mentioned, the action will relax a bit over time. I also have a newer (about a year old) 93G in .22WMR (with AccuTrigger), and it's definitely a much tighter action...for now.

In my opinion; buy it, clean and lube it, and shoot the daylights out of it. For the money, they are really good guns.

You guys are tempting me. I may have to go back tomorrow with cash in hand.

Like I said earlier. Be sure to do the trigger job on it. It's day/night. I absolutely LOVE the trigger on it now after I shimmed it and replaced the spring.

Is a trigger job still necessary even though this rifle has the accutrigger?

I'm sorry I misread the earlier comment. I thought you said it didn't have the accutrigger.

The accutrigger is very nice as well. I have fired a few with accutrigger but never side by side with mine so I never compared.

Plus 1, very accurate guns, esp with CCI Mini-mags and Standard Velocity.

I got an EGW picatinny rail for a larger scope on my FV model. Only downside is the cheap bottom metal and synthetic stock that has a comb height for iron sights. I got a cheek riser so that's solved.

I have a Savage Mark II BV. The accutrigger is great. (I wish my .17HMR had one.) The Mk II shoots sub MOA with CCI Mini-mags and I can pick off small pieces of clays on the berm at approx. 125 yds. probably 9/10 times on a calm day. The action was a bit stiff when new and continues to improve. My biggest gripe is the chintzy magazine.

That's a pretty good deal at your LGS. Go get it. You won't be sorry.

I've got the very base Mark 2 from Wal-Mart. Best $120 I've spent on firearms.
No accutrigger--mine is actually really stiff, but at least crisp and completely without takeup--but I can shoot a penny at 50 yards with Winchester Dynapoint. 100, with the right stuff and if my eyes agree with the scope that day.
Mini-mags have never impressed me. I know many others swear by them, and they always go off, but the accuracy has always just been marginally better than Federal bulk for me.

I picked up the rifle today. Just finished cleaning and lubing it. It's all ready for glass, putting a 4-12x40 Leupold on it next week. Now the trick is to find ammo...

NO the trigger is ADJ and the gun will have the tool to ADJ the trigger if you want it set for target shooting. The trigger is set for hunting but is lit. Shoot it after 300 rounds then see if you need to set it liter. That is one very good gun GOOD LUCK

I have to say, the action has smoothed up noticeably today just after cleaning and lubing it and cycling the bolt off and on throughout the day. Can't wait to get this out and shoot it.

Mine likes SK standard Plus and the new Winchester segmented rounds.
Golf balls at 100 yds

How many magazines were you able to get with it? You'll need as many as you can get, because the one that's already in it will probably let you down sooner or later.
The other "Achilles' Heel" on the Mark II is the extractor. A lot of people, myself included, have had a lot of trouble with Mark II magazines and extractors.
The Savage/Stevens board at Rimfire Central has hosted many tales of woe over the years. :cuss:

It only came with one magazine but I plan on getting a couple of the 10 rounds mags available. I've heard those are much better.
