Everybody and their brother has a website that sells tactical gear, patrol gear, and what have you these days. I was looking a a rather nice patrol bandoleer at one such store and was thinking it might not be a bad supplement to a backpack worn B.O.B.

However the pack is advertised as holding 4x M4 magazines and 2x M9 magazines. Now, I know that the pistol mags should be much of an issue as in my (limited) experience most 9mm pistol mags tend to be the same enough shape. But I don't know diddly about the rifle mags.

I know the M4/M16/AR15 family is all very similar, but the trouble is that I just don't like these guns. No reason, mind you, I just think the M14 (and its "civilian" clones) are... well... prettier.

I'm thinking in a B.O.B. scenario I can throw this over my shoulder, strap my pistol to my hip, throw my B.O.B on my back. Three pistol magazines, five rifle magazines plus whatever arsenal my wife is carrying should get us out of the suburbs and into the safer north woods.

Thoughts?

A good general rule that usually works is to just divide by half for 7.62 NATO. You will only be able to carry half as many mags as the 5.56 guys, but you'll only have to shoot once where it takes them 3-5 shots.:neener:

Shooting once assumes that one shot is a good COM hit. Not a good assumption for the average amatuer shooter. Also, if you are on the move, a single hit with a .223 is likely enough to discourage further pursuit. Not all circumstances are alike though.
Shot placement with either round is key. I remember comments from the Band of Brothers book alluding to similar problems with shooting Germans with 30.06. I am also quite sure the Marines in the Pacific were not satisfied that one shot would insure a Japanese soldier would not try to continue to fight.

As far as the M14, I would interested in a good mag pouch also. I have a shoulder bag now that can hold 8 or 10 mags, but that many mags is pretty heavy. An AK or AR system is much more portable on foot I think.

The ALICE M16(+M4) hold 3 mags. If you cut out the divider strips aat the top of the pouch it will hold 2 M14 mags.

This is not all the time so. I was reading Gunny Hathcock's book "Marine Sinper". There was one story in there where he shot this Viet Cong three times with a 30.06, and his spoter shot him 3 or 4 times with a M14. He finaly went down with a .06 bullet to the head. The guy was so hopped up on opium he just would not go down.

I use Pouches from a company called Spec Ops.
They make magazine pouches in three sizes, 2 magazine M16,4Magazine M16, these also hold 2 .306 magazines from any maker just fine, 6 magazine M16, these are large enough to hold any kind of magazines plus all kinds of gear.

Spec Ops also produces an excellent magazine dump pouch that can be mounted low on the thigh using an adapter or hung from the belt or combat vest.
This is a great accessory, it gives you a place to shove expended magazines instead of trying to fit them back into the carry pouch and can also be used to carry additional gear.

I own a bunch of stuff from these folks and have been extremely impressed with all of it.

Cheaper Than Dirt is currently running a special on a tactical vest (BJR-825) for about $29.97. Bought one on speculation and found it to be a pretty good item for the money. The two front pockets will hold two M14 mags apiece which is sufficient for my purposes.

I liked it well enough that I ordered two more, one for M1 Garand and one for the CAR-15 that I will be eventually building.
did not care for the built in pistol holster so am presently modifying it---but it has definite possibilities.

South African Patrol back

I just picked up a South African Patrol pack at my local surplus store today. It has room for 8-20 rounders and two rather large pouches for other gear. It is a suspender type setup, with the pouches across the small of the back and also has straps that would hold a bedroll or tent on top of the mag pounches, but still allow access to the mags. It would not be as fast as a chest rig, but not as expensive either.

Let me know if you like it, they were like $43.20 tax included. I'd be glad to pick one up for you if you like it and can't find it around your area or on the net.

I have a lot of high-speed, low-drag stuff, but for my permanaent trunk GHB/BOB I wanted something light yet capable of carrying the essentials...

+1 on the Tactical Tailor gear also, besides Surplus, it is the only other thing I buy.

This is what I'm looking at:

I have a similar strap that holds 6 AR 30 round mags. M1A mags will fit in it, but they go in just a hair too far. That might work. You may want to bring an empty mag to a gun show or shop and try the fit.
