Im trying to shave some time off my reloads. I was watching a youtube video of Rob Leatham shooting a plate rack with reloads and realized he did a quick shake of the 1911 to get the spent magazine out quicker. I have run into the same thing when I reload, needing to do the shake. The magazine is not catching, it just takes time to slide out of the grip. Is there a way to speed that up, so the mag is out when the fresh mag gets there? Does it need more weight for gravity? It can be seen at approximately 8:08 in the video.

Far be it from me to say Mr Leatham is doing something "wrong", but that isn't the way I do it, or the way we taught it. The method I use, is to activate the mag release and "snap" the pistol 90 degrees to the OUTSIDE- this means, that the mag well will snap from facing towards the ground (firing position) to the shooter's right (for a right handed shooter) while simultaneously retrieving the reload mag from the pouch. As the reload is coming up to the mag well, the pistol is then rotated to the INSIDE, which places it pointed towards the incoming reload mag. All of this is done with the pistol still in the "working space". Not only does this technique get those empty mags out efficiently, sometimes you actually have to look around for them after the drill is over, because they won't be laying on the ground at your feet. They may be a lane or 2 away.

Thanks for your suggestion. I was in no way suggesting it was wrong, but was wondering if that step could be eliminated by slicking the gun up, adding weight to the mag, etc.
