So I got the chance to go to the range today with my new rifle. I'm happy to report that there were no failures of any type. The rifle is an Entry Level AR variant that does not include any iron sights . I mounted a Pentax Game seeker 1.5-6 X 40 on a Wilson Combat lo-profile mount. Here is a pic:
I sighted in the scope using a Caldwell Steady Rest. First 15 rounds at 25 yards went in to a nice little grouping:
I then used the Bullet Drop Compensator method from the Maryland AR15 Shooters site
http://groups.msn.com/TheMarylandAR15ShootersSite/zeroingabdcscope.msnw
The instructions say to use the 400 yard cross reticle and fire until zeroed. Then the scope should be zeroed for 100 yards at the normal cross reticle.
The group ended up staying pretty tight for the 25 yard zero:
I then took a giant leap of faith and walked the target out to 100 yards. This photo shows 35 shots. The first few were high and left. Adjusting the scope brought the rounds in to the center.
Soon after I replaced the sticker in the middle and fired 20 rounds. All seemed to go in to the center, except maybe one. Also, I was able to fire my first 10 hand loads. These were aimed at the lowest small black sticker.
The last picture shows my next ( and only remaining ) hand loads. A new sticker was placed on the target and shot from the rest. I then replaced the mag with 20 factory loads and fired in to the same target. The last 15 of which were fired off hand standing at 100 yards.
So everyone knows, I have never shot a rifle at 100 yards before. I was able to do all this with all of your help. So a BIG THANK YOU to the High Road, AR-15.com and fellow glock Talkers. I still have a lot of practice ahead until I can reach the accuracy potential of this rifle, and a bunch of dirty brass to whip back in to shape.
As you can see this entry level AR did its job very well. It is not a +$1,000 rifle and even though I was not shooting 2MOA or less, those faults are mine. A guy a few lanes down had a pricier AR. He was shooting WOLF Ammo. After about 150 rounds he had a squib. I believe feeding it right treats me right. Evidence backed that up today. I'll shoot WOLF in Russian Guns...
I shot 50 rounds of Black Hills 55 grain FMJ blue box, 60 rounds PMC 55 grain FMJ-BT and 20 of my own hand loads. 21.6 grain AA 2015, Remington 7.5 primers and Hornady 55 grain FMJ-BT w/c bullets from Winchester brass.
Can't wait till next time... with more reloads.
