Range wear - why?

It does affect me, because those goobers represent the shooting community every time they go out dressed up like something out of a Tom Clancy novel. I don't want the image of gun owners to be a overweight tub of goo who works at Wal-Mart, and dresses up like Rambo to go shoot paper. It kinda helps promote the "Soldier of Fortune" lunatic image that antis love to paint.

And that's why it has to be done in moderation, and with style.

Because it's not what you wear it's how you wear it. A pair of camo pants (cleaned and wrinke free) with proper size shirt tucked in and of matching color (again, clean and pressed). Decent looking sneakers or boots, quality belt. Keep as much stuff off the belt as you can, or keep it simple. Best of all, be polite and courtous. Smile! Walk with pride and confidence.

Compare the two shooters in this pic:

See what I mean? Keep it looking good, make sure it fits

My typical range wear is my oldest pair of sneakers, jeans or cotton shorts, and whatever knit shirt I have lying around that isn't too dirty. In fact, that's my only range wear, the only thing that changes is the color of the shirt and a coat when it's cold.

I love my boonie, it's from a National Royal Ranger camp back in 06, I wear it all the time to the outdoor range.

Fatigues are comfortable, and I happen to like camo

Whatever lightweight t-shirt I happen to pick out, any color goes with pants that are multicolored.

I wear boots everywhere, ankle support for my 6'5 375lb frame.

I have some camo shirts, but I only wear them when hunting or when taking the boys on survival trips.

Don’t judge people based on what they wear, you may find that below the clothing there exists a real live person who could become a great friend.

Definitely not High Road behavior.

I typically wear green digital MARPAT cammies with a boonie cover, face paint, combat boots, a coyote brown interceptor vest, MOLLE-style Load bearing Vest and a MOLLE Pack. I keep at least 3 days of chow, my Kevlar, a small tent and sleeping bag in it at all times. I like to keep 500 rounds of 7.62NATO and 500 rounds of 5.56NATO in belts around my chest just in case we get attacked by the commies I'll be able to put my tacicool skills to the test and help the army.

Yes, I like to think that the people who show up dressed like rambo are funny. But I think that as long as it's not hurting anyone, why worry about it. You say that these guys give responsible gun owners a bad name. Well I tell you what, make it a crusade to tell everyone that Rambo's little brother doesn't represent you.

I wear what I was wearing before I went to the range. Blue jeans and a t-shirt. Sometimes I will put on a utility vest. I stray from wearing bdu's because I have to wear them to work every day. This pic was taken at chickahominy shooting range in VA... the same place that Cho supposedly practiced at. Now they are shutting down the pistol side of the range because of that.

I usually wear cargo/5.11 pants for the pockets. I got a pair of digital camo 5.11 pants free, so I wear them to the range since I don't actually like to wear them in public. I like to have places to put my ammo and the pockets in these pants works really well. I will sometimes wear a vest or button up shirt to practice drawing from concealment. The point is that I wear comfortable clothes that will hold all of my crap and don't really care what I look like when I am shooting.

I dont go to any range anywhere without my desert combat boots, choclate chip desert bdus bloused to the knee w/ matching blackhawk vest rig, and my Bio-hazard super goggles......really, seriously I wouldn't kid about something so serious as bio-hazard super goggles.

:what: Maybe we could suggest a new line of clothing to Tommy Hilfiger or Ralph Lauren. People dress up to play golf; why not put on a little fashion show at the range? Seriously, I have to dress in business attire all week so I enjoy that Ruger or S&W T shirt on weekends at the range and it looks great at Walmart too! I am 56 and also love to wear my 2 Pink Floyd T shirts. I even have a Pink Floyd "Dark Side of the Moon" tie I wear to work which delights my younger coworkers. I would love to wear some gun ties, but................ It is sooooo much fun to be a "rejuvenile"! :neener: God help me if I ever truly have to act my age! :D

I often wear my car club duds to shooting events & stuff gun logos on it to car club events. Sometimes get a weird look at the car events but usually meet another shooter/armed citizen or 2. Also frequently ruber stamp my bills with "armed citizen money" if I'm going on a spending spree.

i don't own any camo clothing currently, but i will admit that utilities are extremely comfortable.

I suggest you reread your post. Perhaps you didn't mean it the way it comes across as written.

To me, it sounds condescending, elitist and smacks of bigotry.

If in fact that is the way you meant it, then might I further suggest you remove the stick from your fourth point of contact.;)

The people who wear camo to shoot in, represent no one but themselves. Is the air thin up there on that high horse?

I just wear blue jeans or shorts depending on the weather, a pair of tennis shoes and then some kind of t-shirt or button down shirt, nothing "tactical" for me.

As a fat kid who wears many tattoos, a mohawk and lots of black clothing, I agree 110% with the above quote.

Who the hell cares what they're wearing? They can wear what they want, when they want. If you're really that worried about "how the anti's will percieve us" based on those who choose to shoot so attired, I suggest you take a deep breath, and mind your own damn business. If that's the biggest arguement we get from the anti's, we're lucky. Any individual with half a brain will realize that looks do not = personality or intelligence.

I often show up directly after work. Thus I look like a Jr. G-Man. Arriving at the range in Shirt, Tie, Dress pants and shoes tends to get every bit as much attention as anything else <grin>.

because those goobers represent the shooting community

thats a real high road comment.:(

I think I have read it all now, we have gun snobs and now we have range wear snobs.

I wear camo bdu style shorts all the time when it is warm outside.
Why? Why not!
What should I wear? Khaki golf shorts? Denim? Fine but I like camo better. I like the cargo pockets and I like how they are cut. the extra patch of material on my butt makes them very durable.

Besides if I wear camo from head to toe you cannot see me. :neener: HA!

Why do you camo snobs care?

Hmmm.

Maybe we should step back and review.

Here's the question in the OP:

Why do people wear camo to the shooting range? On my last range trip there were several people wearing full camo, GI boots, boonie hats etc. Upon closer inspection they were not military, so what in the world was the point behind that?
Notice the OP asks why people wear camo to the range.

The author didn't ask for fashion critiques, let alone demeaning attitudes towards those who wear camo (or anything else), but only for an explanation of why one wears what one wears.

Maybe if we just discuss what we wear to the range without the Rickleseque fashion critiques, we'll keep this one open a while.
______

Me? Carhartt's, a sweat shirt, some boots, and appropriate layers, depending on time of year.

Nem, who understands style, isn't much into fashion, but is ok with it if you wear camo

I suggest everybody take a deep breath, step back and...

Being far less tactful than Larry, I'd recommend this thread get a lock and just go away.

Frankly, I see little constructive in this subject matter at all. Why worry about what other people are doing? If you are worried that someone makes you look bad, you have a very over-developed sense of self-importance. Get over yourself. Worry about how YOU represent YOURSELF.

If somone believes that someone all tactical makes the GUN COMMUNITY look bad, I would suspect that they feel that some good ole boy gun owner makes THEM look like a "redneck." Seriously, get over yourself.

Do I think some people may look comical at a range? Sure. I also think a lot of people look comical doing a host of other things as well. You may not.

I have yet to see this point raised. It is beneficial to shoot in the clothing you anticipate firing the firearm in on occassion. You learn where the clothing bind and pinches. You learn your range of motion in that clothing.

Thank GOD I don't have to go to a range based on some of the attitudes I've seen here. However, if I did, I would not think anything at all in wearing something I expected to wear deer hunting. Yes-- god forbid, it would probably be camoflage. And unlike some here, I'd have a perfectly understandable and logical reason for that choice in clothing.

Now I am guilty of not trying out my clothing like I ought to. Most of my shooting will involve me wearing jeans and a T-shirt. Perhaps I SHOULD put more effort into becoming comfortable in different clothing. I imagine I'd meet the standards of some here when I wore my suit for work to the range. Or would that look make me look like I am trying to audition for The Sapranos and therefore start a new fasion thread?

Seriously. Everyone needs to spend FAR less time worrying about everyone else and FAR more time worrying about themselves.

I like camo, always have. Wore lots of khaki as a kid too. Now there is much better camo, I can look like a desert or sage brush, I can look like a forest. Walking down range in camo is cool, the other shooter can't see you during a target change. I wear camo to Walmart, I wore a camo tie to a Christmas party, I wish I had camo underwear.

People wear want they want because they like they why they look in it and it makes them feel good. Never complained about Magnum PI wearing Hawaiian shirts, he look darn good in them.

I usually wear jeans and tea shirt in the summer. The downside to this dress is sometimes you don't look serious as a shooter. Image is important, but in general I don't care what you wear. I care how you act.
