Hey folks,
After 1000s of ops, my old Lee hand prime needs replacing. Primer cover must be held on with rubber band, small primers tend to flip over in the staging area, and generally loose operation.

Looking at subject tool but need to confirm it will hold the 22 Hornet case.

Can someone confimr? Any comments good/bad?

Thanks, JC

I would replace the RCBS with the new one. It takes regular shellholders

Yes, looked at the RCBS tool using shellholders however it seems to require RCBS shellholders and i have too many Lee shellholders.

Big plus for the RCBS Universal is no shellholders required.

I do not have a round of 22 hornet on hand but the case head of 32 acp brass is very similar and it functions just fine in my rcbs universal hand primer. It works for everything I have tried up to 500 mag. I have the APS strip/universal shellholder as well as the primer tray/standard shellholder model. Lee shellholders seem to work just fine in the other model. I much prefer using the universal shellholder and the APS strips but the older model works just fine as well. Lightyears better than the junky lee hand primers.

Thanks Reefinmike,

Yes, I'm sure the RCBS tool is a step up in quality and although i got many years of service out of the Lee it is a rather flimsy tool for sure. It always tended to allow small primers to flip over..

Hopefully someone will reply to confirm the 22 hornet so i can proceed with the order.

Thanks, JC

I like mine. I use it for 9mm, .223Rem and .308Win. I can't confirm if it will work for 22 Hornet, but I betcha RCBS could tell you. ;) 1-800-379-1732

The RCBS hand priming tool (the one that uses RCBS shell holders) was the biggest piece of garbage I've owned. All it did was jam, jam, jam. I got replacement parts from RCBS in an attempt to get it to work and it never did. I gave it away. You also have to use the NEWER RCBS shell holders in it that have the chamfer on the underside. Older RCBS shell holders will not work in the tool.

The RCBS UNIVERSAL priming tool that has a universal jaw that doesn't require a shell holder may be a much better tool, I never used that one, but the standard hand priming tool was no good for me.

I bought Hornady's hand priming tool and been satisfied with it.

This one uses regular she'll holders. I use it with my Lee's no issues.

I love my old RCBS hand primer that uses shell holders. I also have a newer "universal" model that uses the CCI strips. It works great but takes a lot more hand pressure and I can't prime nearly as many in a sitting with it.

I can check and see if it works for .22 Hornet this evening.

The Hornady looks like it should work well, but I have never seen one in person.

Thanks Walkalong,

Comparing with 32acp it is just too close to call.

I just started priming 100 38spc cases using starline brass and for some reason the Lee shellholder is not centering the cases over the plunger... so I'm shut down until I purchase another tool.

The Hornady tool appears to require their proprietary holders. I thought they were all the same spec..

I have both rcbs the regular with holders and a universal one I found that with the small 223
Brass the one with the shell holder works much better the universal one will sometimes get a poor grip on the 223 and not work as well

Thanks for the links papabear. If i recall correctly the Lee hornet holder is #20 so missing from that set.

I am trying to avoid adding another set of shellholders to my inventory but may be my best option..

The RBCS Universal looked like the best option but now having doubts.

I have used the RCBS tool that uses shell holders for many years. It works great and Lee shell holders work just as well as RCBS shell holders. I have no experience with other brands.

I just tried my new RCBS hand primer with the "universal" shell holder and it works with .22 Hornet just fine. Holds them nice and tight.

I just purchased one of these as well. My biggest complaint is the fact that my lid falls off at random and spills primers all over my flooring.

I did put a band on it. Still wasn't fun picking up those primers off the floor :)

To answer an above question;I am using a lee shell holder.
