Taking my renewal CCL class for the People’s Republik of Illinois this Saturday and I’m ready as hell. People bitch about the length of time it takes for a 1911 guy to shoot 30 rounds (10 at 10 yards, 10 at 7 yards and 10 at 5 yards) but I’m ready.

Love it! I call it my pimp gun. I have wooden WW 1 diamond grips as well for a more historic look but I thought “what the helll, why not.”

I'm confused. Are you not allowed to reload while moving between those yardages? If you can, it shouldn't really take any longer with a 1911 than with any other higher capacity pistol. Maybe a few seconds more at most if a person if rusty on their reloads.

It just takes a bit of time to reload a magazine and I’m ready with pre loaded mags so I can drop empties and slap in a full mag in no time to finish my 30 round requirement. I’m weird like that. 1911s rule!!!

A lot of the kids and their double stacks rolled their eyes when I showed up at the CCClass with this,

They changed their tunes once they realized that someone who actually knows how to shoot quickly and accurately can easily keep up when talking aimed shots. The spray and pray crowd, need not apply.

Right. This is why I was confused about people bitching about your time. Must be some tough folks to get along with. They're literally complaining about, at most, maybe 5-6 seconds extra for the entire course of fire. Anyway, good luck with your class.

That looks familiar!

Illinois actually requires CCL holders to demonstrate that they can competently shoot a pistol? How resreshing!

In Oregon anyone can get a CCL just by taking an online class. They don't need to have actually ever even held a gun to get their carry license.

PA has no class. Just fill out the application.

Missouri requires 40rds. Whoever wrote the law used that number to sell more ammo.

20rds practice then 20rds for qualification.

I also used a 1911 for my CCW Class back in 2010. I too had 40rds of 45 preloaded into magazines.

I feel you brother.

Is all this for a basic or enhanced permit?

You're good and glad to see people with the belief that 16+ rounds in a mag is a requirement for self defense...

Well 28 states show that permiless carry works just fine.
For the most part, but there are those few who have no business carrying a firearm...

This will be a renewal class. I’m unaware of an enhanced permit option.

I'll renew mine tomorrow. Don't need to but it does have 1988 as the original issue year so it makes sense. They don't want proof of anything, just a check for $45 and an ugly pic they'll take. Joe

My last CHL class before leaving, I shot my 9MM STI 1911 (had ammo for it...)

My groups (which were really nothing to write home about) seemed to amaze the 'Glock kids' that comprised the rest of the class. One asked, "How do you shoot like that, man?" and the instructor (another Glock kid) asked if I was "you know, Secret Service or something" (honestly-it was insane.) I just explained that I was shooting a 1911, and it was essentially cheating. :)

And Carl, I just did the Enhanced TN permit a year or so ago; I suppose it depends where you take it, but it was essentially useless. The main takeaway is that in TN door signs have the force of law, and there's no duty to retreat.

I agree that some people should not be carrying a gun. The classes do nothing to prevent those people from doing so. I say this as someone who taught those classes.

I apologize for my poor choice of words in my original post.
Personally, I've got no problem with your choice of words. I was just surprised to hear it. At every firearms class I've been to folks, both instructors and students, have almost always been quite accommodating and friendly. Certainly nobody has had the slightest problem with someone having to do one extra mag change, due to firearm capacity, during a course of fire. Maybe it's a big city thing. ;)
