Ready For My CCL Renewal Class

Indeed; the 1911 is essentially cheating. The instructor after looking at my target said, "Don't think you're going to get a discount for just using part of the target".

The fliers were @ 15 yards. I grabbed a pair of wife's reading glasses as I walked out the door because they really sharpened up the sights...........unfortunately, the target looked like I was looking through a drop of water on the lense @ 15 yards! :what:
I'm glad I didn't have a mouthful of coffee at the 'discount' comment.... 🤣

Last qual class guy in the next booth over was putting all his rounds through the head at 15 yards. Said "showoff", he just grinned. We talked a bit after. Young fella, lots of practice.

My last CHL class before leaving, I shot my 9MM STI 1911 (had ammo for it...)

My groups (which were really nothing to write home about) seemed to amaze the 'Glock kids' that comprised the rest of the class. One asked, "How do you shoot like that, man?" and the instructor (another Glock kid) asked if I was "you know, Secret Service or something" (honestly-it was insane.) I just explained that I was shooting a 1911, and it was essentially cheating. :)
The gap between serious and casual shooters is pretty big at times. Some folks don't know what is possible until they see someone else actually do it. Others are just clueless.
Mix in some non-shooters/first timers and it can be pretty entertaining. I was at our state fair several years ago and the DNR had a shooting range where you could shoot an air rifle for free. The targets were at about 15 feet and the guns were crosman semi auto pellet rifles with 4X scopes that were tethered to the bench by a gas hose feeding them from a bulk CO2 cylinder. They take you in groups of 6 and the next 6 people stand in line where they can see through a big window and look down the line and see the targets.
I took my turn and my girlfriend doesn't shoot rifles much and she opted to just stay in the waiting area. They called the line hot and i took my 10 shots. The lady next to me probably fired the gun 50 times, despite it only having 10 pellets in the mag. The rest of the group wasn't much better. You could tell by the sound that the gun was shooting dry, but she could not tell by her target if there were pellets coming out or not.
My group was a bit over half an inch, basically a ragged hole. The DNR guy switching targets gave me the nod, and then made the other 2 guys check my target out as well. I walked out thinking it was a bit sad that those guys probably had to watch people spray and pray all day with no opportunity to really even give them any help.
When I came out the door a guy was just grinning like crazy as he walked in. I told my girlfriend how scary most of the shooters were. She laughed and told me the guy with the grin had his face pressed against the glass and screamed " OH MY GOD! YOU GUYS LOOK! The guy in the cowboy hat just made the F'n bulls eye DISAPPEAR!"

Bad people travel in packs and no one has ever said "thank God I was carrying a low capacity pea-shooter!" As for idiots..... you can live in a free society with certain risks or you can live in a controlled society where you're disarmed, at the mercy of criminals, and idiots still are still. You can't legislate common sense or morality.
Well ok I rest my case...carry on...

A decade or so ago I saw a fellow doing the same thing. He obviously knew how to shoot, so it was kind of funny when the instructor failed him. "That's a zero. I've never actually seen a zero before." The catch is that in our neighborhood, only center-of-mass hits count. They filled the guy in and gave him a do-over (which he aced) but the look on his face when they'd failed him was priceless.

Well, the Sig is not a .45 :( and it's trigger is pretty stout. It would be a handfull if it were .45 and w/o the grip safety, the heavy trigger is not a bad idea, but everything else is in the right place.:D

You don't need a grip safety.
Historically, Texas Rangers pinned or wrapped their grip safeties with leather thongs. They needed the gun to go bang no matter what sort of grip they had on it.

The Illinois qualifying test is absurdly simple. I would be seriously worried about any individual who could not pass this test of marksmanship even owning a firearm (but I do not dispute their right to do so). The target is a standard sillouette target about 2x3 feet in size. The shooter fires 10 rounds at 5,7, and 10 yards, and needs to get 21 of those rounds to hit the paper (not the sillouette). And you can bring any handgun for the shooting. When I requalified awhile ago, one individual wa shooting a 22 semi auto with what appeared to be an 8 inch barrel. Every person present that day passed the test. I would prefer if this state allowed "Constitutional carry" for many reasons, but the qualification for the license and the re-qualification requirements are not overly onerous.

The rental range here offers B27 targets. They nearly always end up with holes in the head.

The head is a zero in match scoring but if you look at the "little man in the corner" for qualification mode, anything in the black counts 3. Seven ring counts 4, eight ring and in counts 5. That would be in line with permit testing.

There are a lot of people that live in these unconstitutional states and I guess they just have become accustomed to the government violating the 2nd Amendment.

My state passed Constitutional Carry a few years back. I will not be turning in my "permission slip" though. As the pluses far outweigh the negatives

I carry the 1911 or the Sig in condition 1 and on one or two occasions I found the Sig had slipped off safety in the holster when new. I think it was the new holster as it has not done once holster got broken in. Probably not necessary, but I like the grip safety. :)

I knew a Texas Ranger who was stationed here on the border back in the 50's but his first name was Morgan. His son became a ranger, as well.

Here in Ohio it's a CHL (Concealed Handgun License) but for over a year or so now we have constitunal carry. Renewal is just a matter of completing a form and of course writing a check. :) Those with a CHL can renew and the merit to having the CHL is reciprocal agreements with other states. Here is what I find a little peculiar. Years ago, well a few decades ago the course for a CHL was mostly focused on laws, what a CHL holder could or could not do. Today the course is focused more on how the cartridge and gun operate.

I used to be a CHL instructor in Ohio. There is a high degree of discretion involved in what exactly is included in an Ohio CHL course. The course must include 8 hours of firearms instruction and 2 hours of range time. There are no specific requirements regarding the points of instruction during that time, other than that it must include handgun operation and safe handling of guns and ammo, nor is there is specific round count for the range time. Students are also required to read the Ohio concealed carry laws manual from the attorney general. No two classes are exactly the same. It all depends on who is teaching them. Many are essentially a waste of time, other than that they meet the minimum legal requirements to get the permit.

Those with a CHL can renew and the merit to having the CHL is reciprocal agreements with other states.
Two other potentially significant merits to having a CHL is that you can legally carry in a school zone and you can buy a gun from an FFL without a background check.

Yep lots of places we can legally go that the non licensed are not supposed to. Walk right past that 30.05 sign. As far as qualifying, I passed the having to do so mark long ago...
