Recommend a 10/22 scope?

For a general purpose, walkabout field gun, I detest adjustable objectives on big variables. Too much weight, bulk and complexity for such purposes. For this, I like the 4x and 2-7x rimfire line from Weaver, Nikon and Leupold.

However, if you're dead set for a higher magnification variable, the Muellers are very good scopes for the money. I have been very pleased with the 4-16x Tactical on my Savage .17HMR. Although I rarely go above 8x, even shooting crows at 250yds. Been thinking about getting an APT for my long range (.22LR) rig.

This is a regular 10/22 and not a Magnum? You have an effective point blank range of maybe 75 yds. You do not need more than 4x and you need a scope with parallax set for 22 ballistics. BSA .22 Special on the bottom of the "big" scope (that's 1" tube) market up through the Muellers, etc - to the very nice Leupold 22. I have some Nikon .22 scopes and they are absolutely first rate. I'll be putting a Leupold on my best Browning this year or next - but get a scope built for the cartridge. Overscoping is an easy way to get into eye-box / parallax issues :(

He mentioned using it for "long range target use", in which case you need more magnification to see those wee holes. Furthermore, I would argue that parallax adjustment is a prerequisite if using above 7x magnification.

I like my Barska Plinker 3-9 x 32. It was inexpensive and fits the bill for me anyway. I know Barska is not very popular with many shooters for being low quality. Oh well, I will only be out $36 if it fails. I don't anticipate that though.

Choose a scope that is appropriate for your intended useage. Get a spotting scope to see the wee holes.
I very much agree, but I feel moderate-high magnification (in the 12-20x range) is appropriate for a dedicated target rimfire. For hunting, I prefer a lightweight, compact, simple, fixed-4x with a wide field of view.

How far out are you planning to shoot. I like shooting longish ranges with a .22 as well. The problem is that to get decent accuracy, you need to shoot good ammunition and that usually means some sort of standard velocity stuff, which in turn means that it has a trajectory like a rainbow, very literally.

The biggest problem that I run into is running out of elevation adjustment on the scope. I know that the last scope that I was using was some flavor of adjustable Millet with a max mag of 16X (I think it was) and using that scope, I couldn't dial in enough elevation at 100 yards to zero for Wolf Match ammo. It's just something to keep in mind as being something that you will probably have to contend with.

I went almost all out on my .22. A&B barrel, Clark trigger, Boyd's stock, Tac Sol scope mount, etc. I decided to throw a Vortex PST 6-24X50 on it using Burris Signature Zee rings applying 20 minutes of down slope to get more elevation. The scope itself has something around a 65 MOA range of correction.
