For a general purpose, walkabout field gun, I detest adjustable objectives on big variables. Too much weight, bulk and complexity for such purposes. For this, I like the 4x and 2-7x rimfire line from Weaver, Nikon and Leupold.
However, if you're dead set for a higher magnification variable, the Muellers are very good scopes for the money. I have been very pleased with the 4-16x Tactical on my Savage .17HMR. Although I rarely go above 8x, even shooting crows at 250yds. Been thinking about getting an APT for my long range (.22LR) rig.
