Recommend a gun shop near Leesburg, VA

My sister is looking to purchase a gun for the house. She's 1500 miles away so I can't help her, but her husband is a capable guy. Her biggest concern is that she's small (4'10") so there must be a hold-before-you-buy. She hasn't settled on a handgun or long gun yet.

She's in the Leesburg, VA area. What gun shops would you send your pint-size sister to?

I'd recommend Shooters Paradise In Lorton.

I live in SE Virginia and every now and then I drive two and a half hours to buy from them. I might be going again soon for an M&P.

I'd avoid Shooters Paradise as it appears they had a fire and closed their locaiton.

I'll see what's a little closer to Leesburg.

There is a shop in OPAL VA on rt 17 maybe a 45 minute ride for you I can not think of the name of it but it is on the right just past the truck stop and the before the Sheetz gas station.
Otherwise I would sugest a road trip to Green tops in Hanover Va just above richmond

Eric, you are talking about Clark Bros. Guns

They have a very nice range outside and seem to be very helpful. I haven't bought anything there, but the staff seems to be friendly and knowledgeable. If she doesn't mind the drive, it's a very nice place. (It's off of 17, 29 and 15- they are all joined at this point)

Hey makattak thats right I bought the last 3 boxes of 30 remington in the state fron those guys. I also bought a rem700 sendero 7mm mag from them several years ago. Great shop nice used inventory too.

Shooters Paradise did have a fire but they've only moved, not closed. They're working out of an office building now.

Here's their new number 703-339-9880

MoM,

Good to hear- their website needs to be updated then. I might have to check them out since they aren't too far away.

Leesburg

There's a gun shop in Leesburg - south on Catoctin circle before the carwash. Can't vouch for it although because I only moved here in July myself. Also there is one in Purcellville too.

There's a couple more:
Blue Ridge Arsenal in Chantilly, VA
Gilbert's Small Arms Range in Lorton, VA.
Dawson's Small Arms of the World in Woodbridge, VA.

Wouldn't touch Shooter's Paradise now. They are all but out of business, down to just one employee, and Gilberts handles their transfers for them.

Tinygnat,

Your Location is the absolute best explanation of Northern Virginia I have ever seen!

That would be Loudoun Guns. The owner is a nice guy, but his prices are high. Cost of doing business in Leesburg - extra town taxes.

I'd go to Virginia Arms or Sterling Guns (703-406-4867) if I were in the market for a new handgun and still lived in NoVA.

Go to Virginia Arms in Manassas and then stop by Guns and Ammo Warehouse which is about a mile away.

Since it's my thread, I'm going to hijack it:
What does she need to do to buy the gun? Can she just walk in, pay for the gun, fill out the 4473, have a NICS check done, and walk out? Or does she need a permit, FOID card, or other ????

She lives in the city of Leesburg, not sure what county that is or if there are city laws.

Edit: Oh yeah, buying the gun is amongst those steps too.

Further edit: I'd check with your sister as I don't find any "Lessburg", you probably mean Leesburg as all of us have assumed.

EVEN more edits: We also have pre-emption in this state- only state laws apply, localities cannot create further restrictions.

just thought of this this weekend there is a gun show at the show place in richmond. I will be there as there are 1.guns and 2. a few brew pubs I really like.

Yes, I do mean Leesburg. My type-fu is getting weak, or, I'm just dumb. :)

Thanks for all the help guys!

2 forms that show residency. Driver's license and a utility bill/voter card/vehicle reg/etc

She just has to prove that she's actually a Virginia resident and then pass the NICS check.

I've bought from Loudoun Guns, they have a large selectrion, but their prices tend to be high.

Virginia Arms in Manassas has better prices - about 30 min for her.

Please also make sure she addresses the rest of gun ownership. Training in proper handling and care and knowledge of the laws/rules/restrictions.

the other thing she needs to do is join the VCDL and maybe the NRA to help protect that right she's about to start exercising <grin>.

She should buy a STAINLESS STEEL Ruger GP-100 with a FOUR-INCH barrel.
These guns are sturdy, affordable, and ubiquitous.
Shoot .38 special ammo in it, and avoid .357 unless she finds out she really likes the gun thing beyond it being a "just-in-case" tool.

Blue Ridge Arsenal in Chantilly is close to Leesburg.
All those others mentioned are awfully far south.

There is a fairly large gun store right in Leesburg
Loudon Guns
302 Industrial Ct SE # F
Leesburg, VA 20175
(703) 771-7479

I've been there once, and I thought their selection looked good. Prices were typical retail.

It might be worth the trip (not very far) to Blue Ridge Arsenal though, since they have a range, and gun-training classes on premises.

Absolutely Virginia Arms in Manassas. Great bunch of guys running the place, very helpful and professional without being pretentious. They know how to find the right gun for you, and even have a good consignment section if something strikes her fancy. Plenty of holsters and gear too.

Have her pick up a copy of the Virginia Gun Owners Guide while she's at it. Up to date information on VA laws and other nuances. Oh and a box of ammo, JIC. :)

I've purchased sidearms from both Loudon Guns and Purcell guns.

The Loudon Guns store front may be less intimidating to the gun novice of the fairer sex. It reminds me of going to mall jewelery store. Lots of eye candy behind the glass, and you are watched closely by all the folks behind the counter the minute you walk through the door. Lots of items, with high prices.

Dale's place in Purcelleville (Purcell Guns) is his home (he resides above the store). The secret with Dale is to introduce yourself to him and tell him what you are looking for, including that you are a Newbie. He doesn't have a ton displayed, but he has other stock locked away.

I would buy again from Purcell guns.

There is also a gun show at the Dulles Expo in Feb.
