For folks that are a little recoil sensitive, what managed/reduced recoil 00 would you recommend for an HD 12 g shotgun?

Following for info. I have a Maverick 88 20” that I keep for HD.
Not a fan of 12ga recoil— though the gun is great!

I've used the RP for years. You loose 1 pellet and a couple of hundred fps in velocity. As a plus they seem to pattern tighter extending your effective range.

As mentioned, Remington Reduced Recoil 00 Buck.

As for the Maverick. Lube up a phillips screwdriver and take off the butt pad. Stuff about half a pound of lead wrapped up in an old tee shirt. Reinstall butt pad. That shotgun is crazy light and recoils straight into the shoulder.

I have been using reduced recoil Rio buckshot for home defense and Rio reduced recoil slugs for deer. I am a small frame shooter but ain't recoil sensitive but thought as long as they do the job then I will save my shoulder from future problems.

I use Rio reduced recoil 00 buck and slugs for practice. But I load my pump with FliteControl 00 buck for home defense and critter control.

Interestingly, the Remington Reduced Recoil 00 buck has a higher muzzle velocity (1200 fps)

than the FliteControl (1145 fps)

https://palmettostatearmory.com/federal-12ga-2-75-00-buck-8-pellet-w-flitecontrol-5rds-le13300.html

Both have eight pellets of 00 buckshot. All else being equal, recoil from the FliteControl rounds should be a little lower.

But both have MUCH less recoil than typical buckshot loaded for hunting.

What's most important, though, is the way your chosen load patterns from your gun, at the distances that you anticipate using it. This, I believe, is the most important feature of the ammo you load in your shotgun for defensive purposes.

See this post to see how a variety of 00 ammo patterns from one of my guns:

For Mossberg pattern shotguns I really like the mini shells. Much less recoil and increased capacity.

Are you talking about a pump or semi auto shotgun? Would reduced recoil shells function reliably in a semi auto?

Most reduced recoil loads are very "iffy" in semi-auto shotguns. Most will not function reliably or at all.

Choices for reduced recoil are the Reduced Recoil or Managed Recoil shells sold by most shot shell makers.
These work by reducing the number of pellets, reducing the powder charge, or both.
These are popular with law enforcement that had problems with women and smaller men not using the shotgun when needed because of the pounding recoil of standard buck loads.

The 1 3/4 inch mini shells offer very mild recoil, will seldom work in standard pump shotguns and not at all in semi-auto guns.
Some shotguns will work with them, notifiable Mossberg guns with an adapter or a new Mossberg model built to use them, and usually the Ithaca Model 37 and the Kel-Tec KSG and KS7 guns which are modified Ithaca Model 37 designs.
Most of the mini shells by Aquila and Federal are listed as "practice" ammo, but Federal has a new Personal Defense version out in 00 buckshot that has pellets that fragment into two pieces when it hits. These are also higher velocity then other mini shells and might be a good option.

An in between option are the 2 1/4 inch shells. As example, Nobelsport of Italy sells a 2 1/4 inch 00 buckshot load that has extremely low recoil.

Just curious, I know some newer mossbergs are designed to take mini's and normal shells but if you use the opsol mini adapter that snaps into place to allow for mini shells, does it make it so you can only use and cycle mini's while the adapter is in place....

With the adapter in place you can only fire the mini shells. Standard shells will get jammed on the shell lifter. That being said the adapter is very easy to put in and take out. I keep my HD shotgun loaded with mini shells but have a selection of 2 3/4" shells in a side saddle in the unlikely event I need something else or more ammo. Where I live I am more likely to need a firearm to take care of a problem animal than a problem person. So I like to have options.

There, fixed it for you.

You don't say what gun.

First off if it is an automatic make sure the gun will run with whatever you choose.

You really did not go very deep into the back story of this. But I will take a guess, smaller person needs something, shot something of yours and it was not a good experience.

IMHO a great deal of what makes recoil harsh is how many people new to guns stand, I am sure you have all seen it, Sway back, butt tucked in, shoulders back feet in front or even with shoulders. Get them standing right or nothing will work for them.

If god forbid they ever need to use it recoil will be the last thing on their mind, but they do need to practice with it.

My wife is in her mid 70s, 5' 3", 115# and uses a Mossberg 18" 500
loaded with Fiocchi 9 pellet reduced buck. She doesn't love the recoil but can manage it. I haven't chronographed it but at house distances who cares.
