I have had my guns in silicone gun socks, some for several years. Although I try to reduce the humidity, I recently noticed beginnings of rust in a couple nooks and crannies.

Does the silicone offer any real protection? Does it dissipate over time? If so, is there a spray to refresh them?

They claim to offer some protection.
But they do wear out over time.

I suppose you could hose them again with pure silicone spray from NAPA or somewhere.

Personally, I will not store a gun in any case or sock.
The fabric is prone to hold humidity in contact with the metal, and that's a sure bet for rust to start.

Much better to store them in open air.

Use RIG and a rig-rag to wipe them down after handling and they will simply never rust.

I'm on the coast of SC where the humidity is like cuttable with a knife 90% of the time and have been having rust speck problems over the years with all guns. There are several products that reportedly work well and several tests by THR users to determine the best. I have found whether in socks, cases or standing alone in the safe or closet that a good spray and wipe down using Corrosion-X and the final handling with nitril gloves to work very well for me. Even my pocket carry TCP was getting rust in the grooves of the mag release with weekly cleaning. After only one application of Corrosion-X, no rust in over 3 months now. I typically clean only after firing and have been on the road for the last 3 months and not being able to get to a range.

Have to go with RC on this one. No socks for me. Open air and CLP has worked for many years - no rust.

While I own a couple of them, I've always been skeptical that a porous material like the socks will keep out moisture.

If you don't have a safe or cabinet, how about keeping your guns in a plastic hard case that you can throw a few packets of dessicant into?

Unless you have a tightly controlled humidity environment 24/7 - open air and oil. Boxes and cases are for shipping and transporting. Almost every customer's gun that I have seen badly rusted was stored in a case or a box. Avoid attics or basements.

I have had a number of guns in Bore Stores (http://www.borestores.com) for over 10 years now with zero rust.

Why? There was a time when I had to store 40ish mostly blued, in some cases antique, handguns in a 1.2 cubic foot fire safe/RSC. Simply put, the only way to make them fit was to stack them like blocks. The only way to do that without destroying them was with padding between. The normal silicone "socks" offer nowhere near enough protection. Bore stores are thicker and worked out great.

Of course once I had room for a bigger safe I upgraded, but by that point I had more bore stores than handguns so why stop using something that has worked?

As for renewing them, I am curious but can't really help. The few I have that seem "end of life" got a big x marked across them with a laundry marker and are only used to carry fired black powder guns back from the range before cleaning.

I use .....

......Bore-Stores as well. Refresh'em every now and again with spray silicon. Keep a dessicant pack in the locker. Main thing that worked for me was Balistol. Worked better than any oil I tried. Area I live in is NE Pa wetlands in the woods. Frequently very humid. This combo has been working for years now with the occasional wipedown to mainly have a visual, but also refresh the Balistol.

I'm not a fan of putting anything on that keeps air from circulating.

I'd recommend a thorough cleaning of them regularly. Use a little plastic container and some oil, and a toothbrush, to get the oil all in those nooks and crannies.

Oil will help, silicone socks will not.

Socks may not help against rust, but they do protect against bumps and nicks. For those of us who are a little cramped for space.

I don't use the socks for rust protection - if it provides a little extra, that's nice - but AI use them to help prevent dings while getting them in and out of the safe. I use oil, RIG, Johnson's paste Wax or some other things for rust protection

My guns are stored in a basement coated with Carnuba wax. Old fashion Simonize wax works great. I don't buff it; just smear it on and also the bore.
