I picked up a Remington 572 this month. I am now in the process of looking for a scope and rings for it.

I am still on the fence between the Leupold VX-Freedom Rimfire 2-7x33 and the Vortex Crossfire II 2-7x32 Rimfire. I have Tally rimfire rings on my CZ-455 holding a Leupold FX-I Rimfire 4x28mm and am happy with them. However, I am not sure which ones to order.

I would also appreciate comments and recommendations. I have both Leupold and Vortex scopes and I am happy with both. I have no real experience with the Nikon Scopes at all, but the Prostaff P3 2-7x32 has covers over the adjustment turrets, which I like. I really haven't considered the Burris Droptine Riflescope 2-7x35mm Model #200015. There is no real reason, If someone thinks it should be my go-to optic, I would love to hear.

As far as my shooting needs, this is just for plinking and the possible occasional small game. My only other .22lr rifles are the CZ-455 that I mentioned, an AR with a dedicated .22lr upper, and a Winchester 77-22 that my father purchased new in 1946 and I have no intention of making any modifications to it at all. As stated, I welcome thoughts and advise.

If you haven't shot it yet, I'd do so before deciding on a scope. A friend brought one recently that was "jamming ". I ran 200 rounds of all types and it functioned fine. I'm guessing short stroking. (Small female and 2 small kids) most of my pump 22s have to be shucked pretty firmly. I disassembled it (good design, once piece trigger pack, bolt etc) cleaned it and gave it back. Components are pretty low quality and accuracy was pretty abysmal especially for the price, although I do like the design. If that one is the average I wouldn't scope one. I have glenfield 60s, and win 62 knockoffs that shoot better. I've worked on a couple remingtons but they have been uncommon. This is the only one I've tested accuracy on. (Very informally so.... and the scope is pretty terrible)
As far as scopes I put the prostaff or leupold ahead of the crossfire 2. But for a field grade rimfire all are fine scopes. I have a number of rifleman and vx scopes as well as different grades of Nikon. As far as vortex I only have crossfire 2 (decent) and a viper HD. Those two aren't even comparable to each other. For rings any 22 dovetail ring with your scopes tube size will work

So far I have shot it using the iron sights. It seems pretty decent. You mention short-stroking it, I know I was doing that a bit, which resulted in a few failures to fire.

I see in your picture that you have that one broken down. I don't expect to be doing that often, just like I don't change the barrels on my CZ-455. It just seems to me that breaking it down after sighting it in is going to add another variable to the process.

Yeah I just had that picture on my phone and posted it to show the internals and mounts. That one (I think) was actually failing to catch the hammer upon cycling. So after cycling you had a dead trigger. At least I think that was the problem with the one pictured. Either way that's not the one that i mentioned in my reply. It had a modern variable scope on it. I've had a few come to me. The one pictured had an absolute piece of crap scope that wasnt even tight. I fired it for function, tightened and cleaned everything but never tried for accuracy. It's one of the easier to disassemble and repair designs of the past IMO. No springs trying to impale you or anything. And the trigger assembly being all one piece is a plus as well.

As for short stroking, I collected pump and lever rimfires for years. Most pumps are very easy to short stroke. Especially if you are used to big 12 guage pumps. I've never short stroked a shotgun but have done so on most every pump 22. The 62 and 62 knockoffs are prone to it as well.

If you bought it used, clean the heck out of it first. I have owned over 10 different 572s. They made a smooth bore version that is somewhat uncommon.

I bring that up because a few of those 572s I have owned were so filthy that when I looked down the bore, it looked like a smooth bore. After cleaning they all turned out to not be a smooth bore.

These guns were and are shot a lot by the people who own them. Me being one of them.

No, I purchased it new. Frankly, the used prices that I saw were all no less than $50 off the new price. Even the best prices on GunBroker are within $100 of new. Yes, if you look at these numbers you will see that it was steeply discounted (just under $530).

Forty or more years ago I bought a 4 X 32 Monkey Ward from Japan, Western Field scope for (IIRS) $22. I've used it on several rifles from 30-06 to .22. Excellent clear glass and it holds zero. Last year I gave it to a woman friend who put it on her AR, she's killed coyotes using it.

I look for decent glass that holds zero. I don't care who's name is on it or how much it costs.

I always just used mine with irons.

Years ago my Father wanted a quiet .22 for getting rid of rabbits that were eating my Mother’s flowers.

I set it up for him with a 1-4x scope, light and laser. I haven’t changed it since I got it back, used it for armadillos that tore up the yard, until we got chickens and they eat whatever the armadillos were after. Now it just sits in the dark with nothing to do.

I never thought of it as a long range rifle that needed much magnification but it does run on ammunition that semiautos won’t and allows faster follow up shots than most bolt actions. The long barrel and CB’s or Quiets make less noise than a lot of pellet guns I have.

I believe the Nikon and Leupold scopes you are considering are much better than the Crossfire. I do have that particular Crossfire on a Marlin Model 60. It never gets used. The last time I used it was 2012 and I probably put twenty rounds through it. If it starts getting used regularly I’ll put a new scope on it.

I'm basically a Leupold guy but 2 & 1/2 years ago I got a good deal on that 2-7x Vortex you are considering. Shop I got it from let me take it outdoors and play with it under real life conditions. I liked the optics and bought it on the spot. Put it on a CZ-455 and it's been very nice for my usage which is mostly just plinking and small game. Hard to go wrong if you get the Leupold but I'd bet the Vortex Crossfire would also be be a viable candidate and you'd get your money's worth out of either one. Put the Vortex in medium height Warne rings and have no complaints with those either. ETA.. Got a Picatinny rail from DIP ( Diversified Innovative Products ) because I wanted to use rings compatible with Weaver / Picatinny mounting systems and overall the whole setup is great.
