Remington Shut Down!

280 no, your 1993 870 is 100% AMERICAN.

The rumor about Wal-Mart is a new one to me, we've made some terrible looking guns with Sam Walton's picture on them, (The picture kinda reminded me of boxcar willy LOL!)

Our Union is a JOKE! I don't think we would be able to buy the plant from CD&R because our union officers are more worried about taking their little trips to LAs Vagas, DC, and Atlantic city than to care what actually happens with the workers.

Actually , you'll be shocked to learn our Union is the United Mine Worker's of America, yeah the same ones that endorsed CLINTON and GORE!!!!!!!!:banghead:

I have been told, but it's unconfirmed that as soon as we come back to work, 250 people will be let go. :cuss:

Could they save a few of those jobs...

by just turning off 710 production and focusing on something like a plain-vanilla 700 ADL? WalMart would never know the difference, save for increased sales revenue, etc. ;)

Remington makes the real guns at Ilion. The crap i smade at the new prodcution facility in Kentucky. Gun making at Ilion is mostly old-fashioned circa 1955. Yes, they have CNC-machinery as well, in fact a whole wing of it, but the 870 in particular is very labor-intensive.

A day does'nt go by when I don't hear the word Walmart. They've really taken over in retail hard and soft lines. Now the grocery industry is really sweating it. The basis for the grocery retail strikes across the country is the fear of Walmart. I've heard The Boys from Arkansas are moving into banking too. My current circumstances force me to shop at Walmart, and it saddens me to see virtually everything sold there is made elsewhere than the U.S.. I have no idea what can be done to save our country from ecconomic ruin. I remember the distain for items labeled Made in Japan in the early '50's.

Can see it now, the new Walmart smiley face packing an 870.
Blasting the prices in those stupid commercials.

Do you guys really go out of your way to buy American?
I tend to buy what works best for me, or what I find to be the best made out of a group of products, not caring where they are made.
So far I tend toward European equipment. HK and Sig for guns.
Traded the Dodge for a Toyota because it was better made and will get me more on the next trade.
Hate to say it, but unions BLOW! Had a job I loved but was manditory you joined the U.A.W. What a racket that was! We had alot of good, talented people start work and realize it was a union seniority work environment and then leave .
I quit it because the union was so corrupt, and Democrat oriented I could not stomach it.
Had a opertunity this year to start work for Miller Brewing as a manager, after touring the plant twice, and talking with the union people and stewards, I relized it would have been useless to even attempt, so passed on what would have been a fun job.

If possible I try to shy away from union made material and goods. I realize it's a pipe dream to think I can live and buy union free, but I can dream.
I'm sure you're ready to tar and feather me, but that's how it is for me.

Sorry to hear about your mills, but instead of taking the trips and getting fat in their own little fiefdoms, why wasn't the union looking out for the worker in the first place?

Do you guys really go out of your way to buy American?

I try to buy American, but I won't sacrifice quality or pay extreme prices to do so. I buy Toyota over American makes because I've been burned by Ford, etc, but not by Toyota.

This summer, I wanted a good pair of jeans that were Made In America, and fit met well. Guess what, I couldnt' find any. I ended up buying Carhartts, but they aren' t made in the USA.

The American factory worker (actually, the Union) has priced themselves out of the job market. Well, it's not price alone, the quality isn't there either. I'll pay more for a product if it's made in America AND high quality. I will not pay premium prices for junk.

Some of the Walmarts are Super Stores (I think they're called) They are extralarge Walmart / full line grocery store combos and they're non-union. They're a real threat to Alberson's (who also has subidiaries like Jewel Foods) Kroeger, and the like. All these grocery retailers have union employees that are standing fast on wage and benefit concessions. Walmart has much more profit wiggle room due to lower employee wages and their immense corporate buying power. So when a SuperWalmart moves in the nieghborhood every retailer is affected.

Remington seems to have really messed up in the last few years.
I bought a M700 ADL in 1997. There was a big burr in the chamber( I was a noobie, should have checked). At the time Remington didn't repair their products themselves, I had to take the gun across town to a "Remington Authorized Repair Center." This turned out to be a very grumpy old man that took 2 1/2 months(Yes, Months!!!) to pull off the barrel and fix the burr.

I am a person that votes with my wallet. That experience has prompted me to look to Mossberg for my next shotgun, and Savage for my next rifle. Take it from one that knows firsthand about shutdowns and layoffs. If Remington doesn't start finding out what their customers REALLY want(did any of you really want a M710 emergency boat paddle and disposable rifle combo?), this shutdown will only be the beginning of the end for Big Green. It is too bad. Remington has put out some good products in it's history. If the current management keeps up this business plan, Remington will be history.

As a local supplier to Remington, I have mixed feelings. They did mislead us as to their needs when we were bidding on their business. On the other hand NY state is a difficult place for ANY manufacturing concern to make a go at it. VERY high taxes, Workers comp rates, energy costs...the list goes on and on... and this is a union plant. Hope they get their act together, but would not be shocked to see the plant close and move to KY

Really sorry to hear of the layoffs, especially around Christmas. Regarding the business, I buy American, hence my long guns are Remington. If and when I want another rifle, how can I be sure it's made in America?

You can import wine and cheese:

But I think it's best to have your weapons and machine tools made in your own country. We had this hammered home to us during the Lincoln War, when the feds had something like 90% of the industrial capacity on the continent (Remington very important there and then) and our folks were relying on blockade runners and the dubious sympathies of European shipbuilding countries.

Hopefully CD&R will sell us to a company that cares about QUALITY! I'm really hoping Blount/Federal/Weaver/Redfield steps up to the plate and ponies up the money to buy us and insure continued success .

Remington started floating a turd in the bowl when they started putting that stupid saftey on the 870.The one on the 700 is even worse.

Its about time that remington gets flushed.

Sorry to hear about your layoff.Good Luck to ya

I appreciate your support, and I am one of the fortunate ones, as I could change careers unlike so many of the 30 year guys.

Our do-nothing union isn't to blame for high worker wages believe me! I am a level 3 which is what a majority of the machinists make and I'm only making just above $12.00/hr.

Go to any comparible machine shop in the area and you're making about the same.

If any of you would be interested, I have posted some items on the Buy, Sell and Trade: Accessories board.

If you can help me make a Merry Christmas for my family by buying something, I appreciate it, if not GODbless you!

i buy american as much as i can,,,

but quality and price are high up on the priority list too, don't get me wrong,

customer service is another factor, my chances of getting the right guy on the phone are better if i can call around in the states as opposed to an overseas supplier

of course, thats not always true, and i base my FUTURE purchasing decisions on all those factors

if i buy from you and i'm not happy and you don't take good care of me chances are you won't get any more of my money

american company or not,,,

too bad,,,ive always had my heart set on a nice 700vs in .308 for when i got rich,,,

now i just don't know... :(

Our Union is a JOKE! I don't think we would be able to buy the plant from CD&R because our union officers are more worried about taking their little trips to LAs Vagas, DC, and Atlantic city than to care what actually happens with the workers.

Sounds like most unions I'm familiar with.

I'm starting to understand how & why my 700p is missing little chunks of the rifling near the muzzle.... :-(

If anyone has issues with any Remington firearm, PM me and I'll give you the person's name in customer service. I would post it here but I'm afraid he would get deluged with calls, and wonder where they came from. I'd rather not let the powers that be at Remington see me venting here. Unfortunately some of the information I've given you would cause me big problems, they would have a pretty good idea who I was:neener:

I'm glad this forum exists, it gives me a place to share some insight into what's going on with you guys.:banghead:

I wouldn't mind seeing a foreign outfit with its act together such as CZ buy up Remington and knock some heads. As with domestic cars in the 80's, sometimes foreign competition can end up saving you.

Greeting's Remington Employee

Welcome aboard my friend ! Sorry to learn the sad news,
as I have been a faithful Remington supporter for many
year's. During that time, as Boom Vang pointed out I
owned the following; all bought NIB from FFL dealers:

1) Remington 760 "GameMaster" in .30-06

2) Remington 700 ADL in .22-250

3) Remington 700 BDL in .22-250

4) Remington 700 BDL in .243

5) Remington 700 BDL in .25-06 (Boom Vang's favorite)

6) Remington 700 BDL in 7m/m magnum

7) Remington 12 gague 870 Marine Magnum

And, I'm sure there are some that I bought second hand
and used for trade bait. Believe it or not, I have NEVER
had a problem with Remington firearm's!:D

Please give us your thought's and/or opinion's on the
12 gague 870 Marine Magnum? I'm very well pleased
with this weapons performance; as it serves as my
Heavy Duty home defense weapon of choice.

Thanks in advance,
Ala Dan, N.R.A. Life Member
