Remington Shut Down!

Remington Employee and all on this board. This is another example of why we ALL should be contacting our US Senators requesting they pass Senate Bill 659. All gun manufacturers are being bled by frivolous lawsuits that are nothing more than gun control by legal extortion. If this bill is passed manufacturers will have more money for employees, product and will not have to keep passing on the price of defense to consumers. Please, contact your senators. I'm told it looks good for passage. Keep the pressure up!!

The Marine Magnum is a good choice for home defense, also it keeps another of our local buisnesses in work.

The company that plates the Marine Magnum also makes nutcrackers many of you will use this holiday season. HM QuaKenbush also made airguns and rimfires back at the turn of the century.

I prefer my 1100 and 1187P shotguns set up with tritium sights, Choate cocking levers and sidesaddles. The 1100 also has a surefire mounted with a pressure switch.

I also like the 870HD which is essentially identical to the marine magnum.

My advise to all who buy a new remington firearm with the :cuss: locking safey,
Call Remington, tell them you want to order the old style safety for the shotguns/rifles that use the pushbutton safety, (AKA the common safety)

For M700 owners, order another firingpin assembly complete (Old style) and retrofit your rifle with it, use the locking safety asembly for a backup, or strip it down for the parts!!!!!

Gee, R. E., does that mean I shouldn't send my early 70's 700C in for whatever safety recall they were announcing not too long ago ?

Just kidding - fat chance of that happening!

I will buy American when the American products give me a reason to buy it..

a Honda or Toyota doesn't fall apart and doesn't feel like it's got a cheap interior. And buying a Honda _IS_ buying american, because it's made in America.

America has to stop whining about the overseas competition and step up. That's the bottom line. You can't compete in price per hour? That's understood, that's ok.

They ship the cheap jobs to China, you are now an allocated resource, free to take on a BETTER job, requiring skills that aren't available overseas.. Look at Hong Kong, a near 100% resourceless location, almost like Switzerland. They have moved to business and finance, and away from manufacturing. HK makes almost nothing, it's just the sticker that says made in Hong Kong because the port is a free port.

You want me to buy an american firearm? How about trying to be INNOVATIVE, or having something called "QUALITY CONTROL". Someone should buy most American manufacturers a Deming book.. People buy Quality and Price. If you fail on both ends, why would I bother buying? Blind loyalty only leads to certain death for a company. It's business darwinism, if your business isn't up to snuff, it will get eaten..dead or alive.

Why do people want a German car, a German gun? The same reasons. I own an M1A, and for the price I paid, to quote Skunky... "it's a $1500 SKS". While I love my M1A, it's difficult to recommend someone else to spend that kind of money and get that kind of quality. REM 870's are not the same anymore either. People told me to get one, I felt them in the stores before, and they felt CHEAP. CHEAP CHEAP CHEAP. Unlike the older models that felt like quality.. QC for REM has gone to hell in a hand basket, and I for one, don't think I should buy a Remington or support them until they get that back in shape. You can cut anything but quality...

If Remington falls.. So be it. Let that be a lesson to others.. When QC falls, so do sales. As for S&W, you want me to buy FROM THE MAN WHO HAS SOLD HIS SOUL TO THE DEVIL??? No way. Let that be a lesson to others as well.. We vote with our pocketbooks. Ford, GM, step up. Remington, Springfield, step up. Or be eaten...

"Lincoln War"
You mean the War of Northern Agression, don't you?
Or the War of Southern Treason. ;)

You say tomato, I say tomahto, lets call the whole thing off.

No, wait, you can't call the whole thing off. Secession is not allowed. ;)

Mike :D

If New England had seceded like they proposed in 1815 then there wouldn't have been a problem half a century later. Troublemaking Yankees I tell ya. Nothing new under the sun. :) JT

Hartford Convention

Dec. 15, 1814–Jan. 4, 1815, meeting to consider the problems of New England in the War of 1812; held at Hartford, Conn. Prior to the war, New England Federalists (see Federalist party) had opposed the Embargo Act of 1807 and other government measures; many of them continued to oppose the government after fighting had begun. Although manufacturing (fostered by isolation) and contraband trade brought wealth to the section, “Mr. Madison’s War†(as the Federalists called the War of 1812) and its expenses became steadily more repugnant to the New Englanders. The Federalist leaders encouraged disaffection. The New England states refused to surrender their militia to national service (see Griswold, Roger), especially when New England was threatened with invasion in 1814. The federal loan of 1814 got almost no support in New England, despite prosperity there. Federalist extremists, such as John Lowell and Timothy Pickering, contemplated a separate peace between New England and Great Britain. Finally, in Oct., 1814, the Massachusetts legislature issued a call to the other New England states for a conference. Representatives were sent by the state legislatures of Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island; other delegates from New Hampshire and Vermont were popularly chosen by the Federalists. The meetings were held in secret. George Cabot, the head of the Massachusetts delegation and a moderate Federalist, presided. Other important delegates were Harrison Gray Otis (1765–1848), also a moderate, and Theodore Dwight, who served as secretary of the convention. The moderates prevailed in the convention. The proposal to secede from the Union was discussed and rejected, the grievances of New England were reviewed, and such matters as the use of the militia were thrashed out. The final report (Jan. 5, 1815) arraigned Madison’s administration and the war and proposed several constitutional amendments that would redress what the New Englanders considered the unfair advantage given the South under the Constitution. The news of the Treaty of Ghent ending the war and of Andrew Jackson’s victory at New Orleans made any recommendation of the convention a dead letter. Its importance, however, was twofold: It continued the view of states’ rights as the refuge of sectional groups, and it sealed the destruction of the Federalist party, which never regained its lost prestige.

I wish my area of Upstate NY would've broken off of NY and became a part on VT!
High taxes
NYC sucking out taxmoney and resources dry!
one more thing two words........Schumer , Hillary!

Upstate NY DIDN't vote for her!

And for you to lump all "Yankees" together is just sour grapes over a little incident you hold over from the 1860's GET OVER YOURSELF!

It would be like me telling all you if it were'nt for us Yankees, you Southerners would still be chasing Gators bare-assed in the swamps! right 1911?

(I am truly sorry to all my southern friends out there, but I wanted to show 1911 how foolish he sounds.):fire:

Hey Remington Employee, calm down. Not all southerners are pro-secession types. I refer to it as "The war of Northern Agression against the Southern Treason" myself, just to annoy people on both sides. :)

And I hope everything works out at Remington. I still don't have an 870 and I hope to rectify that.

Hi, Here at The Newcomer House Antietam battlefield Museum in Sharpsburg, Maryland "The War between The States "is the correct title . As for Wal-mart the Superstore located in Hagerstown,Md did 1.3 billion in sales in it's first year . Ofcourse downtown is suffering as most travel to do all-in-one shopping at Wal-mart . Only a matter of time before Wal-mart starts controlling prices as did Rockefeller with oil ! Hell they do now on certain items ! But until smart, shrewd business tactics are outlawed ( which I believe would be unconstitutional ) , it will continue to grow ! Sadly our job market takes time to change and we as Americans are impatient . Add into the mix corporate greed, and its KYAGB middle class in America !
K= Kiss Y= Your You can guess the rest . A capitalist soiciety is based on the almighty dollar ! Could be worse tho ! Could have been Iraq ! Still , I'd rather be a lowly blue collar worker in America ( Actually I am a little below that ) , than any other country in the world . Hope all works out for the employees at Remington ! ............WVleo

I've lived in the south, and I know all southerners don't fit into any one mold, that's why I qualified my remarks to 1911.
I have some very good friends in Central FL and the nature coast. And I have relatives living in SC , AL and VA.

It just ticks me off when people lump Upstate NY with NYC. They think the whole state is paved over with 3 feet of blacktop.
I'll tell you what, we have more than few tough as nails mountainboys here, why do you think the 10th Mountain Div is based in northern NY?

It just ticks me off when people lump Upstate NY with NYC.
Understand that "yankee" refers to those folks who move down here and want to make things the same as they were back "home." The general attitude is "you made things bad enough that you had to move, so now you're doing it all over again."

The other part is the political crap we see coming out of NE. In reality, there's a disconnect between urban and rural areas, but references to "yankees" make for good shorthand. ;)

We're learning though. My experiences with law enforcement types in Southern California, Atlanta, and Birmingham were uniformly bad. The more I meet peace-officer types from small towns though, the more I question those initial impressions. Probably more of the same urban vs rural though.

Don't be offended. You have our pity -- NYC's control over NY politics is worse than Atlanta's control over Georgia's politics, and that's enough to make me want to make my next move back to Alabama. :)

Hey y'all, how about taking further discussion of the Late Unpleasantness (that's the "Civil War" to you Yankees ;) ) on over to a new thread in L&P, making sure to find a RKBA/Civil Liberties angle while you're at it.

We now return you to your regularly scheduled Remington Firearms discussion. :)

Like I said, I have appreciation for the way things are done "down south" I"ll educate those of you who don't already know it. (since I'm new to this board)

Ilion is located almost smack dab in the middle of the state, the city slickers have tried to infiltrate our way of life here in the mohawk valley.

Up until 10 years ago we were governed by town boards that were primarily made up of folks who's families have been here for generations.
Now with farms going under and high property taxes people selling out etc.
We have been infiltrated by the city slickers from NYC, Bridgeport Conn, and Boston Mass. (And going for seats on the town boards)

My Father went to a town hall meeting, some broad fron NYC was complaining to the town board members about cow manure in the roads, and how it dirtys up her Jaguar...My Dad chimed up..."Lady, if you don't like cow crap in the road....I'll help you pack up and MOVE BACK TO WHERE YOU CAME FROM!!!!!"

:cuss:

So I sympathize with my southern bretherin, believe me!

I just am sick of having to prove myself to every yahoo out there that thinks that just because you came from the state of NY, you're a city slicker that doesn't know that peas don't come from a can or milk comes from a carton.

One time I went hunting with some folks and this old Flordia Cracker says, "AHHH a city boy, bet ya he don't know wich end of that fancy gun of his the bullet comes out of." I bet the old Cracker I'd be the first man that downed a hog that day....I won $50.00 for my effort.

But I digress.....

Back to Remington buisness, any of you have questions let me know.
Enough of this North VS South...

I grow weary , I have enough problems with the shutdown and trying to scrape enough together for my family to have a nice holiday season.:banghead:

When we lose all our manufacturing to China and like my German company, Bosch, to Brazil where they pay $65/month, we all are going to speak a foreign language, after they buy us up... Doesn't you anti-union Southerns realize, that companies that move South, is just a stopping place for Mexico and China...What happened to your Cotton Mills? Twenty or thirty years of machining experience, can not be be duplicated with BUBBA, working in South Carolina or Kentucky right off the farm, or from China, right off the rice patty... These workers know how to make a quality product, too bad MANAGEMENT wants to cut corners and quality.
GET THE REAL STORY!!! Unions are for quality, management, not!!!!

Hmm, I'm not totally sold on the 'unions are for quality'.

My first job out of college was at an injection molding company supplying the (then) Big 3 domestic automotive manufacturers and Tier 1. On one plant visit to one of our customers (one of the 3), we were on an investigative journey to determine why they were always running out of our parts when the scheduling and delivering data stated otherwise. in short, it was found that the union workers were stashing our parts, in full cartons, in their lockers so that the lines would slow down and would require that they work overtime. At time and a half and double time, of course.

I have five Remington shotguns and haven't really had issue with any of them. One even visited Vang.

That said, companies seem to go the way of most of us people. Everything goes in cycles. These days, competition is so intense that mistakes can be more costly. Many companies/industries have had to slim down. In fact, it is becoming clear that many manufacturing jobs have been exported. So, returning to work with a reduced work force sounds like a reasonable expectation, but we all hope that you also get some decent management. I hear that the "Green Party" believes in having the workers vote in their own management. Prior to your post, I thought this a horrible idea.. good luck..

[Rant]
Nice to see that Remington Employees' thread has been hijacked for something a stupid as what the true definition of Yankee is.

Good to see that the past is behind us with the Civil War, and no one holds a grudge.

It $uck$ that Remington Employee is about to get unpaid leave, at Christmas time no less.
He joins THR, posts good, new, information about an American firearms institution.
Information that if his employer finds out who posted it, may get him in deeper water.
AND STILL we have comments like

one of the earlier deleted comments

To quote Kaylee
We now return you to your regularly scheduled Remington Firearms discussion.

Thanks RTFM I appreciate the kind words.
I was thinking the same thing, I thought I'd get more questions about Remington Products and the like and I don't mind that at all.
But to re-fight the war between the states all over, well I really don't care to do this...:banghead:

If 1911 won't apologize, I will.

That kind of talk isn't what THR is all about, Remington Employee. And I'm sorry you, and others here, had to see it. (This coming from a transplanted Yankee stationed in the Deep South - Florida) I hope your Christmas bodes better. :(

The Civil War starts all over again, til we are all unemployed, and all our guns and freedoms are all made oversea's or in Mexico or Brazil. I thought we citzens of the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA...How are we going to defend ourselves when all our guns are made out of the USA, and are at the dictates of other foreign governments... Then all you Bubba's out there can be slaves to China, Germany, Japan,.....

I have deleted several posts which were made after Kaylee's admonition to keep it ON TOPIC. If yours was one of them, you may also be receiving a PM or two from the moderators.

Please continue the discussion about Remington's shut down.

ANY further discussion of the uncivil war in this thread is unwelcome and will result in moderator action.

Does anyone think that when the foreign competition gets the edge with their cheap labor that their prices will remain low when they corner the market? Would yours? We should instead be questioning how a $2.00 hr overseas person is cranking out a superior product. Have we lost our pride of workmanship and/or work ethic? I realize this is a gross generality and I don't mean guns per se although many fine ones are made overseas.

How 'bout our compassion? Rem is going though a tough time and is having to defend heritage for gosh sake! We're better than that. I wish I could help Rem but I'm in the same boat 'cept I won't be going back in Jan. The music biz is getting crunched (record co's, they earned it.) and my last check is next week. It was a good run of 19 years but it's time for a career change. Change is good. Family & friends make all the difference in the world. Happy Holidays to you, compadres! Hang in there Rem!
