This is directed mostly to MEC.I haven't read his book yet or come across it in any posts, do the Remington revolvers have the accuracy to take rabbits and frogs the way the Colts do?I am a fan of BACKWOODSMAN and read of lots of folks hunting small game with Colts but not the Remy, also MEC are you partial to the '60 and was this model engineered/designed to better withstand or survive a flash-over/chain-fire?I have a '51 and it doesn't look like there's anywhere for the projectiles to go.

I'm not MEC but the remington is the only C&B revolver I've ever taken game with. All my colts hit 8-12 inches high at handgun distances where the remington hits 1 inch low. All have the power for small game but because of the poi issue the remington is the only option in my experience. Wheres your 1851 hit by the way.

Of course as you stated it hit high before filing the hammer notch.I'm thinking about dove-tailing the barrel for a set of sights as I saw a Walker done this way.My concern is the rear sight being tall enough for me to see behind the hammer. After this I'll have issues with historical correctness and holster fit issues.I use the gun for snakes, varmints, etc.I mentioned MEC because of some photos in a sagebrush products thread and one entitled Comenchero Frogs or something to that effect{Very good pictures and reading!}It just seems the overwhelming majority use Colts and I wondered why.I'm wanting to buy a '58 and a pocket version with the spur trigger but I've read of some folks having trouble with cylinder lock slop and loading lever trouble with the brass-framed models. On the other hand, with some barrel lapping/forcing cone work I've read acceptable accuracy can be found. Thanks for the reply.

The remington is every bit a good as a colt for this. any such would need to be sighted to hit close to point of aim and this is a bit easier with a Uberti Remington. They come with a dovetail mounted, extra high front sight so that it can be filed and drifted for a good sight-in. A well set up remington functions as reliably as a colt

I'm not mec either, but mec told you the truth for sure. The (for me) Rem.1858 N.M. Army .44 is a fine hunting gun, if you like to hunt with handguns, and are lucky enough to get a good one. (as I was) When you get used to it, you will find that the handling characteristics are superb. (again, at least for me).... I find that the Colt 1849 Pocket .31 is a fine squirrel and rabbit gun, but if you're going to go rabbit hunting with the .31, you're going to need to do a lot of work. Not on the gun; on you. Anyway, both of them have sure put a lot of meat on mine and my family's table. Good luck... Be careful, stay safe, and have fun....MEC, if you see this, please tell me where I can buy a copy of your book, if you would, please sir. I understood from the guy asking you the question that you have written one. I would admire to own a copy of it...

Mr. Walker, I too am a fan of MEC and got wind of his book here. It is available at amazon.com. and he is coming out with a new one. There is a review/test of his first book on gunblast.com . This is an online gun magazine done by a neighbor of mine here in Tennessee. If you would like to see some exerps from the book pull the history on MEC or the blackpowder segment on this site. It is full of pictures and load data. Also MEC writes or has written for several major publications and knows what he is doing whether with pistol or pen.MISSEDSHOT.

Dang! You know the Quinn brothers. The book that's out is Percussion Pistols and Revolvers etc etc. You can google it and find it at several place including amazon and Barnes and Noble. You can also get a whole lot of it by searching posts on this board. The pictures are better on the board as they are in color and the fidelity is better than the print job.
