Repurposing non gun stuff as gun stuff

Crown Royal bags work great for extra mags and soft cloth for scope in my 22lr rifle cases.

Butter tubs for extra 22 ammo when you open a bulk pack and the cardboard falls apart.

A place to buy knife sheaths for magzine holsters.

I picked up a handful of free nylon knife sheaths into magazine holsters. I went back later and they didn't have anymore to give away or for sale.

I looked around and found a store that sells them fairly cheap.

I picked up this for single stack 6 round magazines, (9mm Mak, .380).
"Will hold most folding knives up to 4" closed."
I also love that they are 50 cents each while they last on clearance:

This one fits the .380 single stack 6 round magazines, but not the 9mm Mak.
"Will fit most folding knives up to 3" closed."
(It is also hard cased and is not my favorite, $2.):

This one fits the .380 single stack 6 round magazines, but not the 9mm Mak.
"Fits folding knives up to 3" closed."
(It is soft sided like the first one listed and can go horizontally on a non-wide belt. It is $1.30):

This last one fits 15 round double stack 9mm magazines and is $1.90:
"Fits folding knives up to 5" closed."

They are inexpensive enough that you can measure, guestimate, and use my experience to take a chance on what will fit what you need. It is a inconspicuous way to carry spare magazines. I also use them to keep dirt, dust, and lint out of my magazines in my range bags.

Edits: Just found this to hold six knifes (magazines) in a knife roll. Silicone treated cloth. Not for EDC, but good for storage and/or a range bag:
http://www.discountcutlery.net/AC802-Sack-Ups-Knife-Protector_p_31420.html
And a non treated roll:

I also just did the math and think that this one would fit 8 round single stack magazines, like Makarovs:
"Fits folding knives up to 4" closed."
Makarov magazines are 1 inch longer than TCP/LCP magazines. TCP/LCP magazines fit in the SH255 sheath designed for knives up to 3 inches, so they should fit in the SH256 designed for knives up to 4 inches.

Should this be in its own thread? A thread dedicated to which specific magazines fit into which knife sheaths?

I didn't think that the "Prius-uber-millennial" types were all that into raising families. I thought that was more the SUV crowd.
Ahhh....I see that you have read my neighbors' Prius bumper stickers; "My other car is a micro-SUV'. :D

.

I bought a nifty heavy upholstery fabric retro-looking bag with a zipper closure at Hancock Fabric for $5 meant for carrying a sewing machine (OK yes I have a hand crank 1934 Singer 201 sewing machine and enjoy making an occasional quilt and I was shopping for fabric) that carries all my Ruger Old Army loading and shooting stuff and gun. It has inside pockets and strong handles and has worked well several years. Kinda reminds me of a carpet bag from the percussion era. Don

I use #4-6 drywall anchors for .22 snap caps, they work great. When one gets chewed up, toss it and use another. Like $3 for 100 of them. Plastic coffee cans for brass, ice cream containers for holding small parts when cleaning, etc. Pipe cleaners, tooth picks, and que-tips all used when cleaning. One of the better ideas that came from a range I belong to is mounting an old jack to a board and placing a sand bag on it to use as an adjustable elevation rest.

Tubs, jars, and the like - containers of nearly every size for storing stuff.

I've also used the rubber coated dish drying racks which are about $3 as an excellent pistol rack for 8 guns.

Monster energy drink screwoff caps as small screw/pin holders on the work bench.

Various hard-shell cases for gun cases.

A lot of happiness on the cheap ...

$1.99 at Harbor Freight: a set of airbrush cleaning brushes. Great for cleaning in all those nook and crannies, be it black powder, pocket knives, or cleaning the lint from pocket carry guns. Set goes from 1/16 inch to 1/4 inch in diameter. Indispensible, and I'll bet you can find even more uses for 'em.

Old canvas 12 pair over-the-door shoe organizer re-used as a mag holder. Can also use it to hold ammo boxes or pistols, but that can be too heavy on a closet door. Two 30-round mags will fit in each slot.

Plastic coffee cans for brass. Peanut butter jars for batches of prepped brass, or bullets, or completed rounds. I often take the PB jars of ammo to the range. Love to see the looks when I dump a pile of ammo out of a PB jar to reload mags. One time another guy pulled a PB jar of ammo out of his range bag. We just nodded at each other. Yeah. :)

Sears has tool bags for 5.99 that make good range/ammo bags. I have a bunch. Keeps me from loading my bigger range bag so full of ammo I can't easily carry it.

The Sterilite "shoe box" 6 qt. size for under $1 at Stuff*Mart hold my cleaning supplies, ammo, about everything.

The cell phone holsters at Dollar Tree hold 2 double stack mags. They even have a snap.

I use a mouse pad on my bench to set things on. Also use one when cleaning handguns. I get the $0.90 ones from CDW.

On the flip side I have a primer tray on my desk for a coaster.

Crown Royal bags work great for extra mags and soft cloth for scope in my 22lr rifle cases.

I also use the Crown Royal bags as dust covers for my powder measures and progressive presses.

I bought a new, larger roll around tool cabinet for the shop. The old one was moved to the reloading room and holds dies, reloading tools, parts, and other gun related stuff.

Costco smoked almonds plastic cans for brass; they are square and stack neatly. The magnets from Sonicare toothbrushes have myriad uses-I glued one in the top tray of my RCBS case prep station. It hangs on to a hex wrench for the Trim Pro, a bent paperclip for case inspection. The heads of the toothbrushes make great scrubbers for gun cleaning.

I've used old tupperware plastic containers to keep spent brass for future reloading.

I'm also will be using garage tool hooks (med-large ones) as rifle hooks in my gun closet.

I've used old clothes esp pants to cover the table for rifle cleaning and disassembly.

I used a Sony Walkman for a derringer holster for quite a few years.
It was a yellow waterproof cassette player and had a full length clasp on one side and rubber buttons.
I removed all the guts and glued the robber buttons back in place. My American 9mm derringer was a perfect fit. I filled the negative space with close cell foam. I took a cassette apart and glued one half into the lid with the view window and glued the 1/8 " head phone jack in place.
Snap it on your belt, throw the headphones over your neck and your good to go. To get to it just flip the clasp the front door would drop open and the derringer would fall right out into my palm.
Thankfully I never had anyone ask what I was listening to.

An old big 8mm camera case became a loaner range bag - nice and padded

An old (but clean) rubber shower mat becomes a nice cleaning mat on the work bench

Old canvas shot bags become storage for sorted brass, both primed and unprimed

Small bench grinder type of stand from Northern Tools became a nice indoor, portable reloading bench

Old plastic Folger cans for brass

Old plastic colander and 3# plastic dishwasher soap bucket get used for tumbler media sifting

10 drawer Steelcase file drawer (each about 6" deep) holds loaded shotgun ammo - I can get 45 boxes of 12 per drawer or 54 boxes of 20 or 28

Kitty Litter buckets hold empty shotgun hulls sorted by gauge

Big blue plastic storage boxes (with the interlocking finger type top) become range and camping boxes with everything inside

Kitchen plastic trash bags get used as dust covers over reloading presses

Old canvas shot bags get filled with spent primers and sewn up for "sand" bags for the bench, door stops, etc.

Old retail display items become portable take-down target stands

Old golf balls become GREAT .22/pistol reactive targets

Old T shirts become good cleaning patch material

Pipe cleaners, Q-tips, and used dental tools become cleaning implements

Disposable plastic food storage boxes for brass storage

Lizard Litter from PetCo as cleaning media

50/50 mix of janitorial ammonia and liquid detergent = homemade Sweets 7.62

Countersink = 5.56 brass decrimper

Hardly counts, but I have a paintball "field box" or whatever it's called from Plano that I use for my gun tools and used to use for my range bag. The barrel holder works great for takedown cleaning rods, and there's a decent organizer.

I also use an electric guitar gig bag as a covert rifle case.

I use a small Crockpot to melt lube (Crisco/Beeswax) for bullets going into blackpowder cartridges.

I use an oak machinist's chest from Grizzly.com to store replacement parts, spare grips, for my guns.

I use shoebox sized plastic storage bins from the Dollar Store to make cleaning black powder revolvers easy...one box for each gun to hold its parts separate from other guns when they are disassembled, one to hold hot soapy water, one to hold rinse water.

I use lots of Q-tips to get into the nooks and crannies when cleaning a gun.

I use a rolling tool box for my range supplies, holds: ammo, spotting scope, brass rod and hammer (for squibs), lube, oil, bore snakes, and multi-tool.

Tried one of those running strollers for carrying clays and shotguns once, but it had to much weight on it once and broke.
