I may have asked this before, if I have, I have lost it.

I am needing the services of a good revolver gunsmith. Doesn't need to be anyone "famous", but someone who knows what he's doing, naturally. I have a S&W model 27 needing barrel work. Originally, I needed it set back to take care of a really bad breechface, but I just lucked into a nice 4" Highway Patrolman barrel surprisingly cheap, which is pretty much what I really want anyway (instead of the original 6"), so I'd like to have that installed, barrel-cylinder gap adjusted properly, etc. I know the finish won't match, but I'll take care of that later.

If any of you can recommend someone who does good work, I'd appreciate it. ;)

An American Handgunner magazine Top 100 Master Pistolsmiths is Frank Glenn in Arizona.
He's done a good bit of work for Colt owners on the Colt Forum to top reviews on pricing, turn around, and high quality of workmanship done to factory standards.

He seems to be a lot faster then other people.

Frank is a great option. I used him to rebarrel my Det. Spl and my Diamondback when I lived in Phoenix.

I did not consider shipping in this. Holy crap. I simply can't pay $200+ just to ship the thing back and forth. Not gonna happen. I'll need to find someone in driving distance. Rotsa ruck, right?

I may get the Brownell's "set-back" cutter and do it myself. I can make up blocks for my old rifle barrel vise (if it hasn't rusted to oblivion yet) and blocks for an action wrench.....

Shouldn't cost you that much if you have an FFL nearby. Pay the dealer to mail the gun to the smith. Postage with insurance, say $20 plus whatever the dealer charges you. When the smith is done, he mails the pistol back to the dealer. Again you'd pay the smith for the postage and the dealer for receiving the gun. Depends what your dealer would charge. All together I would think $100 tops. If you have any kind of reasonable relationship with your dealer it may be much cheaper. Doesn't hurt to ask.

Call your local gunsmiths and get quotes. My local smiths ranged from $50-$200, and a week to 6 months. I'm happy with the $50 bill and he also was only a week long.
