rifle in 'To Kill a Mockingbird'?

Saw part of 'To Kill a Mockingbird' on tv last night - in one scene, Gergory Peck shoots a mad dog with a rifle. I *think* that this was a US Army issue rifle before WW-I - the magazine was on the side of the receiver.

Can someone remind me of the name of this rifle? Maybe we used it in the Spanish-American War?
