Rimfire Range Day

What do you think of the Mk II? I’ve been waffling between that and a 10/22 for a 50 to 100 yard practice rifle as a companion to my 20” A4 clone. Even reloading 223, the ammo is 1/5 the price.

I like the Savage MkII and own two of them. One is chambered in 17M2 and the other in 22LR. Both have the heavy varmint barrel and both are very accurate. Both match my Savage Model 12 in 308 with the varmint barrel.

I would (and did) get the Savage MkII for an accurate target shooter, and it is. I also have a 10/22 and they are a lot of fun and very customizable. I suggest putting a CMMG 22 conversion kit in a cheap AR, I used a PSA freedom series. That thing is more fun than it has any right to be. It's pretty accurate too, considering I'm not using a dedicated 22lr barrel. If it were my decision, I'd buy the Savage and get a conversion kit for the AR. I too, have "rediscovered" the joy of rimfire shooting of late.

I've shot a total of less than 200 rounds of centerfire anything this calendar year, not counting my carry gun. 150 of those rounds were in bowling pin matches in the last 2 months and a few mags worth of practice prior to.

I can't say for certain how much rimfire shooting I've done, but 5000 rounds would probably be in the ballpark. My kid has gone through about 8 boxes of Federal AM and 4 or 5 of the Aguila 250 round packs in the MKIV he got for Christmas last year. I shoot more than he does. If my math is right, 11 rimfires have come home with me since the last centerfire did...and account for 15 of the last 17 guns I'd acquired. I don't still have ALL of them though.

The Savage Mk II and a CMMG conversion is a really good idea/combo. I could just drop it in the A4 and use the same rifle. Do they work with Interceptor and Velocitor ammo?

My plan is to get the Savage and put Tech Sights or similar for use with iron sights. One of my Marlin 60s is set up for longer range shooting right now and is accurate enough for the job. I wonder if they’d let me use a conversion in the silhouette matches?

When it comes to AR conversion kits, you will always get better accuracy out of a 1-12 twist barrel than you will from a 1-9 or 1-7 twist barrel. The best of course is a dedicated setup with a 1-6 twist barrel. I have used conversion kits quite a bit with the M16A1 and M16A2. The A1 always had better accuracy with its 1-12 twist over the A2 with its 1-7 twist.

To answer your question. Yes the Interceptor and Velocitor will work just fine with a conversion kit. Any high velocity or hyper velocity ammo will work.
