I have Alliant RL15 Powder hat i am currently using for a 130gn Bullet for my 270Win.

I am looking to see if anyone has worked a load for a 150gn Bullet using RL15. I contacted Alliant and they have no data for a 150gn bullet for RL15. They didnt say i cant use it but they cannot provide anything since they have not tested a 150gn in 270.

There are a lot of other calibers using RL15 with a 150gn bullet just not in 270.

I will be using a Sierra GameKing 150gnSBT. Anyone have load data they worked for this? I will carefully work up my own load just interested to see what stats others may have gotten.

thanks

There are programs like quickload that enable people to theoretically test load ideas and see if they work or the possible dangers. I dont load 270 but I'm guessing the powder may be fast for the application. Rl15 is common in 308 and slower powders are used in 30-06 cases???? A load may not achieve good velosity compared to others commonly used or not give a case fill that is appropriate.

In my opinion RL15 is simply too fast for the .270 Win (or any 30-06 derivatives). Of course keep in mind that since the mid-70’s I’ve only ever used H4831 in my .270’s. In my opinion it is THE best powder for that cartridge. I use it under 150 grain Nosler Accubonds with great success.

I have a friend who uses RL 17 in his .270 Win.
I use 4350 exclusively, now. Anybody need some IMR 4831?

Sierra #VI has data using RE-15 with 130 gr. bullets, but not the 150's. As others have said, RE-15 is too fast for heavy bullets in the 270. You can't get up to respectable speeds without getting into dangerous pressures.

I've used Re-15 in the 270 using the 110 Barnes TTSX with great results. The 150's are too heavy for RE-15.

I’m an RL 22 fan for 6.5x55 140 and 160 gr bullets and .270 150 grainers.

I wish I could be more helpful with an RL 15 load, but I don’t have any. :(

Good luck, and stay safe.

it maybe ok for 90 or 100 grain bullets. as others have said, it is too fast for the heavy 150 grain bullet.

While Reloder 15 is not recommended for 150 gr bullets in the .270 Win, I am confident one could carefully assemble some safe handloads, if one were so inclined. Hodgdon lists loads for the 150 gr bullet in .270 Win with both IMR-4064 and IMR-4895, powders with very similar burn rates to Reloder 15. That would provide a reasonable starting point, then work up carefully watching for pressure signs. Realizing you are unlikely to achieve anywhere near the velocity potential of the more appropriate powders, and that accuracy may not be what you are hoping for.
Or you could just buy a pound of H-4831, H-414, or any of the dozen or so other powders that offer better performance and tons of tested data.

I have some Nosler 140 gr in .270 Win. Went to Nosler online to find load data for it and they have load data for RL 15 for the 140.....but once you get to 150's they move up to RL 19 and maybe a few others.

But if I had the 130's, with load data for a powder I had on hand that was working, I'd stick with that till it was gone.

Don't remember where I first heard it, but comment was "if you find published load data from a reputable source, load is good and you can trust it". Inferred from that was if load data is not there, there is a good reason. Something about square pegs in round holes and all that.

Do you have anybody else around you that reloads you may find somebody that has ramshot hunter that is willing to trade you a pound or something that is better suited to your needs
