Ruger LCP frame cracked

The point is that if the Ruger's LCP manual actually does say not to shoot +P ammo through it, Ruger has done all they need to do to inform the owner of the risk involved. It was suggested earlier that they should do more, which is absurd. You're right - manuals tend to be boring; but it's the most reasonable avenue for the company to communicate

.

If enough people complain that the warning info is "ONLY" printed in the manual.... history has shown that Ruger will print it on the slide to eliminate that cop-out excuse.

IMO: There has only been one guy in the last 30 years since Owners Manuals with Red Warning statements printed in them has read an owners manual cover to cover.

And he died of boredom, or it was you??

I read the manuals. Not every word, but I read them before I start operating things.

I am curious, why did the frame crack back there? Is that pin a slide stop? Does the slide hit that then go forward?

If they do I'm blaming you for giving them the idea.

No, the pin is one of two that retain the frame insert (carriage) in place. As I said in an earlier post, with the frame cracked at that pin, the front pin was basically the thing holding the insert in.

It is a good thing the OP recognized the problem before he shot more +P ammo. :)

Yes, I agree with you. I was under the same impression until I read this thread.

I'm not real fond of BB and other companies that load such ammo "creating" their own specs by calling things +p. I've seen 40S&W labeled +p also. I think that if they labeled properly and put "overpressure ammo above standard pressure specifications and without any pressure standards" people wouldn't be so quick to buy it.

Interesting thread! I carry a LCP as a BUG. I will keep an eye on mine. I re-load but not for the .380, I just run wimpy box ammo through it.

I had a 1991 Ruger Super Blackhawk 10.5" that was shooting all over the place. I addressed the usual suspects like ammo, shooter, sights etc. I gave up and sent it to Ruger. It turned out that the frame was cracked where the barre inserted into the frame, not visible to the eye without disassembly. Ruger sent me a brand new 2015 model at no cost!

You have to love a company that stands behind their guns (but not in front of them)!

Got a fedex notification... they're shipping something back to me today. Supposed to get here Wednesday.

Maybe my LCP turned into a 3 screw .45 Colt Blackhawk! :D

That little crack ought not worry anyone. Little JB weld and some gorilla tape over it to match the color and it'l run fine!!

Your LCP looks like a first generation. They will probably be sending you a new 2nd gen one. I bet you will like it even more as the trigger pull is much nicer.

My LCP is also a 1st gen 371- series (post recall). It had a defective slide originally but after slide was replaced it has run fine. I have stopped counting rounds but it is around 2000 or so. Nothing but standard pressure, a mix of factory and reloads. No cracks or other failures (did have to replace the barrel pin retaining spring once, never affected function). Having seen the OP's pictures I am glad I never tried +P. I would guess that the +P could be the reason for the grip frame crack, but who can say for sure. BTW, my LCP was my first handgun, bought in 2009. I plan to keep it, still carry it when really thin is in.

This thread I'm hanging on is close to snapping,
Did you get it back yet?

It's back!

Ruger sent me a prepaid fedex label, I shipped the pistol back, they had it five days and they shipped it back to me with a new gripframe, new steeel magazine catch, new takedown pin for some reason, new trigger (I think), and maybe the frame insert and other miscellaneous guts. The sheet just said gripframe, takedown pin, and "various parts were replaced as part of a rolling update" or something.

Trigger pull is noticeably heavier so maybe new hammer spring also. 7 round mags wouldn't lock in the new frame/mag catch, so I sanded the tops of the baseplates a little until they locked in easily. It wouldn't run properly on federal american eagle ball (leftover stash from 2008 panic years, (lots of FTF/failure to fully chamber; see the video below if interested), but S&B ball and Hornady Critical Defense work flawlessly. THANKS TO RUGER FOR EXCELLENT CUSTOMER SERVICE!!! :)

Feels good to have this little gem back in my pocket.

Video will be HD once it's done processing.
Malfunctions about 13:30 if you want to see what they look like.

skip to 19:20 if you just want a summary of service and troubleshooting.

Ruger always has been good every time i hear about a problem and the few i have sent back that i even told them i broke from my fault, they still fixed it for free.

well i have a 371XXXXXX that supposedly is updated like yours is now, i cant shoot it worth a darn either, the trigger is to hard for me.

I didn't notice before but mine already has the metal backing in the grip frame like yours came back with.

i shoot low and right with mine. its a shame because a friend of mine has a older one like yours and the trigger is noticeably better than mine but i believe there was a recall about it going off when it was dropped and then the trigger was changed.

This is bugging me. Why won't this run on American Eagle Ball anymore??

4 of my 8 mags jammed with it last round. FTFC, or FTF. It appears there's a crease or mark on the nose of the round where it's bumping into something, like the edge of the barrel. Fired 8 mags and had 4 malfunctions. Loaded the same "bad" mags with S&B ball and fired 50 rounds without issue.

What could be happening? A tap on the rear of the slide does not chamber it. It's jammed up against something. You have to retract the slide partly and then release it and it will chamber. Extractor issue now? Was that part of the "rolling update"?

Bothers me. This pistol ran EVERYTHING flawlessly before.:banghead:

Apparently those are very light loads. The carbon on the sides of the cartridges is the giveaway. Not enough oomph to cycle the gun.

Short answer is that your gun doesn't like them. Use something else.

So if the frame gave way at the crack, could the slide come back at you?
