I have a tang safety(late model) M77 ultra light. This rifle doesn't fall into the trigger over travel issue from years ago. (i have one of those also and removed the problem set screw)
This late model failed to fire and it acted just like the safety was still in the safe position. Upon cleaning this rifle(it had been stored for 2 years and the lube appeared to be crusted), the striker began to function. however there was very minimal trigger travel. The next week the rifle was removed from the safe, and again it failed to function.
I then took an Allen wrench and tested the over travel screw to see if it was loose, and it was tight. According to Ruger this series M77 had the over travel setscrew epoxied.
Anyone heard of this kind of problem?

ruger trigger

the overtravel screws on the later model m-77 are designed so the only go in so far. They really serve no function as the early models.

It is possible someone put the old style in,and it is not set properly ,if that is the case the trigger system should be checked out and reset.

It is possible the trigger is gummed up with old solvent or oil .If this is the case it should be disassembled and cleaned.

In either case trigger/safety work should be done by someone that is qualified

The replacement set screw that Ruger sent out to remedy the problem of the bad nylock on the original over travel set screw was designed to only go in so far and do nothing except fill a hole the used to have a purpose. This later model was as Ruger claimed epoxied in.
I did spray clean the trigger mechanism and it did start working. There was hardly any trigger movement though. Then a week later it failed to function again.
When i received that joke of a fix kit from Ruger years ago i wouldn't put that ridiculous screw in my gun. After writing Ruger they gave me the OK to send my gun in and the would reset the over travel screw and epoxy it. I never sent it. as then the paper trail is reestablished.

Ruger trigger

It sounds like the overtravel screw is stopping the trigger before it can release the sear.

Best bet is to have someone qualified dissassemble the trigger , clean it and reset it .
