I have a SS target Mk II with the heavy tapered 6 7/8" barrel that Bubba worked on before I became the owner. The front sight blade has been filed on top, but I have a new replacement blade coming from Ruger. It is Ruger P/N A01501. I received my roll pin punches today, proceeded to remove the roll/spring pin with no problem, but the blade won't budge. Is this normal? Maybe Bubba put some locktite or worse in the slot? Suggestions for easy removal?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Have a blessed day,

Leon

He says he already removed the pin.

I'd suggest doing the usual that you'd do with a frozen bolt:

1) penetrating oil
2) heat
3) ice
4) tap
5) wait
6) repeat
7) force

Either use a sight pusher or punch and big hammer. But in any case you need a way to support the barrel so it will not rotate when you hit the sight with a punch.

I don't know if Ruger requires the sight to be removed from left to right or R to L.

If you are going to trash the old sight you could cut slot it or cut it into.

Not a drift adjustable sight. Blade in slot style. Heat it up with a hair dryer, should expand the slot. Then should be able to visegrip it out.

Put several layers of masking tape around the barrel so there is no chance of damage in the next step.
Fashion a small block of wood say 3/4 " square and a few inches long. This will be the fulcrum.
Clamp the barrel in a sturdy vice. Using the vice grips, grip the sight and using the fulcrum a few light taps with a small hammer should lift the front sight out of the slot!

This method has been used for years to remove staked in sights from M1911's!

Thanks for your reply.

I tried that method yesterday, and again this morning. Tried heating the barrel and then the fulcrum again. Nothing, it hasn't budged. I'm wondering if Bubba put JB weld or something in the slot, but I can't see any residue.

Good News, I finally got the sight out. I held the barrel in a vertical position, with the muzzle end on a piece of wood and tapped the pointed end of the "hook" with my ballpeen hammer. Finally it began to move.
The slot in the pistol is undersize, a .124 wd ground cutting tool will not go into it, and the base of the removed sight is .124 thk.

Thanks for all the replies.

Have a blessed day,

Leon

The standard way to remove a sight like that is to place the barrel upside down with the sight in a solid vise. Take a rawhide or nylon mallet and tap upwards on the barrel from underneath. The sight stays in the vise and the barrel is undamaged.

It's most usually from the burrs on each side of the sight blade created when the sight was installed at the factory. The sight blade is installed in the barrel ring groove and then the pin hole is drilled half-way from each side. After that, the pin is installed. Most likely, you will need to install the **new** front sight blade and then drill through the holes in the barrel band, half-way, to make sure they meet in the middle and then install the cross pin.
The factory sight blades as well as custom height Ruger sight blades all need to have the mounting/stabilizing cross-pin holes drilled when installed:

A sight pusher would be useless for this type of sight removal.
