I just picked up a ruger super single six. Always wanted one. It is an "old" model single six from 1971. Does anyone know how I can tell if the gun has been modified in the recall of the old single six models? What would I looked for to know if it has been through the recall modifications? Thanks!

The 'modification' I believe you are referring to changed it to a transfer bar ignition system. They also put something at the end of the serial number. I forget what at the moment. If it has a transfer bar, I hope you got the little bag of old parts.

They do not mark anything at the serial number. They make a mark on the front underside of the cylinder frame - under the grip frame if the conversion has been done. It's changed back easily enough so even if it still has OM parts it could have ben converted and changed back.
If it's got NM parts, it'll have a transfer bar.

Cock the hammer if you see a metal "tab" it's got a transfer bar.
Look to see if it says "New Model" on the pistol if it does again it has a transfer bar. Someone here may be able to tell you when Ruger started the "New Model" series. You have yourself a nice little pistol enjoy it SA revolvers are a ball to shoot.

The OP said it was an Old Model from 1971, so it wouldn't say "New Model" as those weren't available until 1973.

When you cock the hammer, if a safety conversion has been done, a tab of metal (the transfer bar) will stick up between the hammer and firing pin. The first "safety" cocking notch (the hammer sitting about 1/8" away from the frame) will also be gone. It still has the half cock notch for rotating the cylinder.
