Saw an ad in the Lexington Loser for a weekend special .Buds has S&W M&P 15 Sport rifles in 5.56 NATO, 30 rnd mag, 16" barrel, for $549.95. I'm a babe in the woods when it comes to AR-type rifles. Good deal? Good rifle? Yea or nay? Thanks.

Good rifle.

As one who owns only Rock Rivers and Colts, iff'n I was to buy another these days (price being an object), it would probably be either a S&W or the new Ruger.

Street price on both should be similar - the Ruger has a few things the Smith doesn't (if that's important to ya) such as dust cover / forward assist.

Since this is your first, you'd probably be doubly served by starting with one of these instead of dropping big bucks, since there's going to be a learning curve AFA what you like / don't like, etc.

Heck, at the street prices for the S&W & Ruger, you could buy, and should you ever decide to spend big bucks on something down the road, you could sell the Smith / Ruger and not lose any money to speak of (if any).

You also have the luxury of having an AR in hand while you can afford to look for a deal to be dropped in your lap (if you go more expensive later) - you might save enough money by taking your time shopping on something more expensive down the road that you may end up basically getting the Smith / Ruger for free!?

Even though I have a stripped lower for a planned 300 Blackout build and have no real need for the .223 I keep considering getting a Sport as the prices will probably not be lower.

The Forward Assist and Ejection Port Cover have been discussed at length on THR and the overwhelming concenus is they are not needed on a civilian model.

The search function on this forum is your friend and will answer all of your questions.

Not having the forward assist lets them stack a lot better in a safe or gun cabinet. I like the dust cover for no other reason than it helps keep the bolt carrier from flopping around when I'm swapping uppers (if I remember to close it).

I wish someone would make an upper with the dust cover but without the forward assist.
