Don't part with the 686- Of all the guns that have passed my way the biggest regret was selling my 686- It was my first handgun, bought it new when I turned 21 and sold it in college simply because it was a round butt :banghead:

At the time I had a throb for square butts and now... now... :scrutiny:

Fact of the matter is that a pre-1997 686 is a better gun than any 66

What shooters who are knowledgeable look for is the relative few that were made shortly after World War Two and have the current style hammer block that makes them unquestionably safe to carry fully loaded with 6 rounds.

Ah, Transitional K Frames, like this one, a pre-10 M&P 6" ...

Most collectors couldn’t care less about this. In addition most sellers – including dealers – don’t know about the difference either. So if they are in perfect mechanical shape with clean chambers and bores, but noticeable finish wear that should be expected, they will be priced at $300 or less – and sometimes much less.

Yep, paid right at $300 for mine.

This is the one with the Deane King "cockeyed" hammer and action job that I had posted about/discussed with you a month or so ago. Finish is around 70%, the diamond magnas match the s/n on the butt of the gun, the bore and chambers are clean, and the action is ultra smooth with a very crisp break. Well worth $300, iMO.

Yup, that's what I met. The King action work is frosting on the cake, but not a whole lot of people whould know that. In some circles the caliber (.38 Special) and barrel length (6 inches) would be a negative, but not in my book.

Without question, at $300 you got your money's worth. ;)

That's a nice 3" k-frame, but the price is crazy.

Last year, I bought a 3" 13-2 for $375. It needed to be reblued($90), but it looks like new now. Nice piece, but these are NOT worth the outrageous prices some seem to be willing to pay.

Wow... The OP's auction has got to be proof that you'll see it all on the internet eventually. Somebody really wanted that one, is the lesson I take away, and NOT that I should have spent the 1980's dropping all my disposable cash on stainless Bangor Punta trash in order to become god-emperor of monkey island via Gunbroker nowadays. ;)
