S&W M&P 2.0

Apparently, S&W is definitively responding to its critics of the M&P:

• New M&P M2.0 crisp trigger with lighter trigger pull.
• Tactile and audible trigger reset.
• Accurate 1 in 10” twist M&P M2.0 barrel.

The ergonomics of the M&P were already superior, the sights good and the pistol reliable. Addressing the trigger and the barrel's accuracy should make a pretty good striker-fired service pistol outstanding.

Looks like that should run head-to-head with the XDM. I already have an M&P, so this isn't for me, but it's nice to see they are improving the line.

Very interesting. I always like the design ergonomics of the M&P line, just didn't care much for the trigger. Looks like S&W has addressed this issue with the M&P 2.0. Don't really need another full size 9mm. but would be interested in something in a compact version with these upgraded features.

I'm glad they are looking to improve the product, but honestly I'm having a hard time seeing how adding a more tactile reset and some frame stippling amounts to:

the M&P M2.0 delivers an entirely new platform, introducing innovative features in nearly every aspect of the pistol

The biggest thing that needed addressing, on average, was the accuracy, IMO... if they have done that, great.

I'm very interested in the flat dark earth 5 inch model....that is sweet. Sportsmansoutdoorsuperstore has them for $449 right now.

Now I understand why I was able to get one for $400 2 weeks ago... No inkling they were coming out with an updated version.

There really is nothing wrong with the current models. It's a worthy pistol (if one likes striker-fired polymer handguns). Both the triggers and the barrels have been substantially improved in the last couple of years, and if you get one with the excellent factory night-sights, you've got a fine pistol. And after looking again at the 2.0 version, I'm not sure I like the looks of the slide as much as the original model.

I didn't see it mentioned. Does it still use the original M&P magazines?

I'd already have one of their "Victory" .22lr pistols if they'd stuck with using the M22A magazine (or used M&P 22 mags) instead of yet another unique magazine.

I am very interested also in the FDE 5" barrel model, just what I have been looking for if the trigger is good.

This is very refreshing to read comments on a new offering that are not ladened with negative responses, i too think the new Smith is a cool looking pistol and am anxious to feel and shoot the FDE model. Also on the horizon was the announcement from Remington on their striker poly framed 9mm, since i have the RM 380, R 1 SS .45 and R 51 all of which are reliable and easy shooters the natural progression is to shoot this new one. Large frame, super capacity ( the Remington holds 18 + 1) are not my favorites any longer but still spark my interest ----if the S&W 2.0 is as neat as my Shield i may just take the plunge.

I don't mean to thread drift but have a quick question about the accuracy statements.

Wasn't that mainly an issue with the earlier fullsize?

My 9 Compact version from 2008 or 09 seems reasonably accurate considering I only shoot it freehand/standing and 90% pfnthe time in the 20ft to 60ft range.

I have one of the early M&P 9Cs and the custom touches I applied to make it prefect were to add "golf ball" dimples to the grip, night sights, and an APEX RAM to give the trigger a more positive reset. It's fired well over 15000 rounds and it still looks, feels, and shoots like new. That being said I REALLY want the new one. When the M2.0 comes out in compact I will definitely get one. The new one addresses any of the shortcomings of the pistol and I already think it was better than any of its competition.

According to the articles I've read the slide has been slightly lightened but it will still use all the previous magazines and holsters.

This is a key question. I first assumed the 2.0 would use the original mags -- but since you asked, I then remembered that my (newer) SIG M11-A1 and P-229 Legion use the dash-1 magazines and although the old P-228/229 mags work, they're a looser fit and the dash-1 mags do not work in the old P-228/229 pistols ... so, great question. I'll bop on over to the S&W forum and see if this question's been answered there ...

My answer to your question would be yes, although my employer adopted this pistol in 2008 or so and frankly, the accuracy was acceptable for us (not great, merely average service-pistol accuracy, but sufficient for our needs) -- but the semi-auto purists out there widely decried the M&P's accuracy and slammed the barrels used in the first series. The last order we got in has somewhat improved accuracy, but really, with a sample size of over a few hundred pistols, I thought the criticism of the early M&P's accuracy was a tad overblown.

Thanks Old Dog.

I thought I was right in thinking that it wasn't an issue with the/my compact.

If the trigger is substantially better than what was in the M&P last time I tried one a few years back, my interest is definitely piqued.

Video says it takes old mags fit and should fit holster too. Seems the trigger guard was left unchanged. They added an extra grip panel! didn't think it was necessary myself but they say they fit 90% of peoples hands with the four grips. I hope the trigger feels like the Shield. Really nice trigger out of the box.

Surprised they added steel to strengthen the frame and reduce frame flex. Oh and having a safety and mag release that ambidextrous will make those lefties happy....if they like the gun.

I'm waiting on some reviews to come out. should be interesting.......

I handled one in the shop yesterday. I wasn't impressed. But then, I'm not really a striker gun guy.

Trigger felt like most every other striker trigger to me. If it was improved, it's still nothing to write home about. Ergonomics were good, just like the old m&p, but I didn't care for the sharp and aggressive stippling. (but I don't like sharp guns. Heavily checkered 1911s and I aren't friends either)

To sum up, if you handed me both guns in the dark, the only way I could tell a difference was stippling, and I like the old one better. But that is just me. The next guy to grab it while I was there loved it and bought it.

I had a chance to handle one this afternoon, and I will say, there are some good things going for it, particularly the trigger and more aggressive grip texture, but I will say this, I'm not crazy about the slightly longer slide, nor do I particularly care for the new XD/XDM like loaded chamber indicator. I'll be sticking with my Sigs and Walthers.

Okay, after having seen a couple other M&P 2.0 pistols out in the wild, I find myself scratching my head. Anyone know if the FDE version has the different LCI and the external safety where as the black versions have the old style view port style LCI and no manual safety? Is the FDE the version that was submitted for the XM17 trials? Something that was designed specifically to be anti-gun state compliant?

does anybody know what they did to the slide release? it looks odd.
Yes it is redesigned to prevent slide from going forward when slamming in a magazine. It is a two position stop. It must be down to get the slide back on. No more spring holding pressure in a upward position.

This review might give you a better idea as to how it works...:
