I was given a S&W Mod 36 cheifs special, curious as to how old it is. I know they range from the 50s - 90s

the numbers read..4010xx. Does anyone have any idea as to when this one was manufactured?

Thanks in advance!

Thanks alot. What would you guess the gun is worth? Great condition. Has only been shot once that I know of, Still in the blue box it came in with the wax paper and 5 really old looking bullets. Even has the Warranty and specs paper still in the box. Also...I have a box of .38 special bullets and they do not fit. they are too short and fat. Do they take a different type of bullet?

+1

If you have a Model 36 it is a .38 Special and all .38 Special ammo will fit.

Whatever you have in a .38 Special box is not .38 Special or it would fit.

They ones that dont fit read W-W 38 S&W...The ones that do fit say R-P .38 SPL

I bought one with a 2" barrel when they first came out, number 32xx. I traded it on one with a 3" barrel and square butt that I still have. I should have kept the old one and bought the new one, but I was younger then.

+P with a Chiefs special?

I am looking for 38special ammo, found some online, but the only local stuff is +P . Is there a problem with using +P in a mod 36 chiefs special?

No.

Back in the day, S&W customer service would tell you the Model 36 was not +P rated, and would eventually shake the gun loose sooner then standard pressure ammo. But that there was no safety problem with shooting it.

But +P was loaded hotter then then it is now.

If you plan to shoot it a lot at the range, I'd go with standard pressure ammo and practice just enough with +P to know what to expect when you carry it for serious use.

+P won't be as much fun to shoot in mass quantities anyway due to the increased recoil.
